Chapter 98

Evelyn heard familiar footsteps behind her. The crisp sound of leather shoes echoed against the marble floor.

She turned to see Alexander Hamilton standing at the corridor's bend. His suit jacket draped casually over his arm, tie loosened around his neck.

He strode forward, reaching out. "Let me take her."

Gregory Wilson sidestepped, keeping Evelyn out of reach. "Mr. Hamilton, mind your manners."

Alexander's gaze turned icy. "Dr. Wilson."

"Surprised you remember me."

"You were at the restaurant that night."

Gregory smirked. "Indeed. Quite the spectacle—you causing a scene with your pregnant companion."

Alexander's jaw tightened. "That's my wife you're holding, Doctor."

"Wife?" Gregory arched an eyebrow. "Then what does the child in her womb call you?"

Alexander's face darkened. "Put. Her. Down."

"Dr. Carter injured her leg."

"I'm her husband. I'll take care of her."

"Does your conscience ever trouble you, Mr. Hamilton?"

The air grew heavy as Alexander clenched his fists.

Evelyn pushed against Gregory's chest. "Let me down."

"Let him try anything."

"Now."

After a tense moment, Gregory carefully lowered her to the floor.

Alexander immediately stepped between them, extending a hand. "Thank you for assisting my wife, Doctor. I'll treat you to tea sometime."

Gregory eyed the offered hand before shaking it. "The pleasure's mine."

Curious nurses peeked from doorways as staff passed through the busy corridor.

Evelyn spoke through gritted teeth. "Follow me."

Alexander gave Gregory one last glare before turning away.

She walked slowly, favoring her injured leg. He caught up easily. "Let me carry you."

"No." She dodged his touch. "Annabelle will throw another tantrum. She vowed to ruin me—I can't risk it."

His eyes dropped. "I'll call a nurse then."

"Unnecessary." She flagged down a passing nurse. "A wheelchair, please."

Within minutes, the nurse returned with one.

As Evelyn settled into the chair, Alexander moved to push it. The nurse blocked him. "I've got it. Back to your office, Dr. Carter?"

"Yes."

The nurse wheeled her forward with Alexander trailing silently behind.

Inside the OB-GYN office, Evelyn waited for the door to close before studying him properly. His hair was disheveled, suit wrinkled, face scratched with fresh marks.

"What happened?"
