Chapter 57

Alexander Hamilton forced a bitter smile. "Emily Zade...is no longer with the company."

Evelyn Carter finally remembered.

Emily had been fired by Annabelle Taylor and replaced with her cousin.

"Then have the company's legal team come with me to the civil affairs office to finalize the paperwork."

"Evelyn," Alexander's voice was low. "I failed you and our child..."

"What's done is done." Evelyn turned to Annabelle. "Happy now, Miss Taylor?"

Annabelle smiled slyly. "I hope Dr. Carter keeps her word."

"How about this?" Evelyn said coolly. "Have Alexander sign a power of attorney, and the two of us can handle the divorce? Since you're a lawyer, you'd prefer handling it yourself."

Annabelle's grin widened. "That’s a great idea. Actually, why bother with the hassle? Alexander and I are getting married anyway. We could just handle the divorce and marriage registration together—efficient, don’t you think?"

"Suit yourselves."

"Don’t take it personally, Dr. Carter. Alexander is just worried about me and the baby. My belly’s getting bigger, and he doesn’t want people gossiping. You know how protective he is of me."

Evelyn scoffed. "Of course. After all, you two are the best of friends."

She emphasized the word friends with biting sarcasm.

Everyone at the table caught the jab—except Gregory Wilson.

Alexander’s expression darkened. He had lost weight recently, his once-confident demeanor now shadowed by gloom.

In just a month, he had become a different man.

Vivian Dempsey rolled her eyes. "Are you done? If so, get out. You’re ruining everyone’s appetite."

Annabelle feigned offense. "Dr. Carter, does your friend always speak so rudely?"

Evelyn lifted her gaze. "What part was rude?"

"Telling someone to leave isn’t rude?"

"Oh." Evelyn pointed at the door. "Then leave."

Vivian burst out laughing, slapping the table. "Miss Taylor, you must be something special to push Evelyn this far."

The waitstaff began serving dishes.

"Your order is complete. Enjoy your meal."

Gregory gave a polite nod. "Thank you."

Vivian picked up her chopsticks, eyeing the lingering couple. "Still here? Waiting for security to escort you out?"

Annabelle lifted her chin. "Who dares? I’m carrying the future heir of the Hamilton Group!"

Thud!

Evelyn slammed her chopsticks down.

She rarely lost her temper.

Even with the most difficult patients, she remained composed.

Alexander spoke quietly. "Evelyn, I’m sorry. I’ll take her away now."

Evelyn let out a cold laugh. "If you could control her, would she have barged in here in the first place?"

He closed his eyes briefly. "My apologies."

"Mr. Hamilton, I thought we could part amicably. But clearly," Evelyn met his gaze, "you need to keep your woman in check. Disrupting my clinic was bad enough—must you humiliate yourselves in public too?!"
