Chapter 922
The couple's theater was dimly lit to perfection.
Evelyn stared at the screen without absorbing a single word. The couple behind them was making too much noise—the wet sounds of their kisses echoed uncomfortably in the quiet auditorium.
Her fingers tightened around the armrest.
"Tissue," she blurted.
Alexander immediately retrieved a travel-sized pack from his suit pocket, even peeling one out for her.
She mechanically wiped her palms, though they weren't sweaty.
Onscreen, the leads kissed passionately in the rain. Behind them, fabric rustled. From the corner of her eye, she saw his Adam's apple bob.
"Is the AC broken?" Her voice sounded brittle.
He tested the vent. "It is warm. Should we move?"
She shook her head. Standing now would only draw more attention.
The scene abruptly cut to a hotel room. The heroine's spaghetti strap slipped—Evelyn choked on air.
Alexander offered his thermos. When their fingers brushed, she recoiled like she'd been burned.
"Let's go." His suggestion came suddenly.
Relief flooded her—until she noticed every other couple tangled in their own worlds. One pair had practically melted into their seats.
She froze.
"I'll lead," he murmured.
She pictured his tall frame eclipsing half the screen, possibly getting them ejected. Gritting her teeth, she sat back down. "Wait a bit longer."
Breathy moans rose from the row behind them. Even in the dark, she saw the tips of his ears redden.
Evelyn forced her gaze forward. The actress now straddled her co-star, their lips locked. She thanked the universe for the darkness.
"This movie—" His voice strained.
"Wasn't my pick," she cut in.
When credits rolled, she sprang up like a jack-in-the-box. Rushing toward the exit, she nearly collided with a soda-bearing usher. Alexander shielded her with one arm while carrying untouched popcorn, his composure unshaken.
Cool air hit her face. She exhaled. "I didn't know it was that kind of film."
He nodded. "Your viewing history leans toward documentaries."
Her head whipped toward him. "How would you—"
"Your tablet's watchlist. And the Blu-rays on your shelf." A pause. "Nature films for insomnia."
Her mouth opened, then closed.
A plush bear suddenly blocked their path, clutching rainbow balloons.
"Congratulations! You've won our family package!" chirped the mascot. "Expecting moms get first pick!"
