Chapter 864

Emily Zade had already rescheduled all of Alexander Hamilton's afternoon appointments. He decided to accompany Evelyn Carter back to the hospital.

The moment they stepped into the office, Olivia Lightfoot rushed over in a panic. "Dr. Carter, there's trouble! Someone filed a complaint against you for misconduct!"

Evelyn froze. In all her years at Central Hospital, she had never received a single complaint.

Alexander's brow furrowed slightly, worried the morning's shift change might have caused issues.

Olivia tugged Evelyn toward the hallway. "The department head is waiting for you."

In the corridor, Olivia lowered her voice. "It's a patient's family member. They accused you of having a bad attitude."

"Family member?" Evelyn thought for a moment. "The husband of that emergency delivery patient this morning?"

Olivia nodded. "Exactly. The department head says he's being unreasonable, but protocol must be followed."

The department head's office door was slightly ajar. At the sound of knocking, a voice responded immediately.

"Come in."

The department head set down the file in her hands. "Are you feeling better? I was shocked to hear you fainted."

Evelyn forced a smile. "I'm fine now."

Olivia stood to the side, hesitating to speak.

The department head sighed. "The husband complained that you ignored him. He was worried you wouldn’t take proper care of his wife."

Evelyn scoffed. "How considerate of him—he didn’t even know his wife was in a car accident and went into premature labor."

"I see." The department head's frown deepened. "No wonder he filed a complaint. Guilty conscience."

Olivia couldn’t help interjecting, "Men like that deserve to be divorced!"

"It's never that simple." The department head shook her head. "Even the wisest judge can't settle domestic disputes."

Evelyn said softly, "Divorce during breastfeeding is difficult. It's their private matter. We shouldn’t interfere."

Her hand instinctively rested on her abdomen. Since becoming pregnant, she had grown more cautious.

Olivia opened her mouth, glanced at Evelyn, then closed it again.

Outside the door, Alexander waited quietly. When Evelyn emerged, he stepped forward immediately. "Do you need my help?"

Evelyn shook her head. "It's nothing serious. I have rounds to make. You should head back to the office."

Though he sensed her distance, Alexander still replied gently, "Alright. I'll pick you up tonight."

During her rounds, Evelyn found the new mother silently crying. After speaking with her, she learned the woman was indeed considering divorce.

Back in her office, Evelyn noticed a missed call from Bianca Langley on her phone.

She called back immediately, but no one answered.

"Vivian, have you heard from Miss Langley?"

"Not at all." Vivian Dempsey's voice was drowsy. "What's wrong?"

Evelyn tightened her grip on her phone. "She called me but didn’t answer. Now I can’t reach her."

"Don’t worry. I’ll go look for her."

Half an hour later, Vivian called back. "Found her! She's at Adrian Valentine's cemetery."

Evelyn exhaled in relief. "Is she okay?"

"She said she’s going to Europe for a trip..." Vivian paused. "Oh, and she mentioned calling to thank you both for adopting the baby."

After hanging up, Evelyn couldn’t shake a strange feeling. Bianca's voice on the phone had been eerily calm—too calm.
