Chapter 285
Evelyn Carter stood frozen in place.
Alexander Hamilton's gaze pinned her down like a vise.
Nathan York sensed the tension and quickly dragged Vincent Wilson over.
Vincent took one look at the charged atmosphere and felt his head throb.
Caught between two powerful men and two women, he was trapped in an impossible position.
Someone had to break the stalemate.
"Alex," Vincent ventured hesitantly, "should I get you a private room?"
Alexander shot him an icy glare.
Vincent rubbed his hands awkwardly. "Or maybe... the lounge area?"
Gregory Wilson spoke up abruptly. "Vincent, set up a table for me. The farthest one."
"On it!" Vincent seized the escape, pointing to a corner. "Clear that table over there!"
He turned to Evelyn. "Still want to continue your lesson? It's quieter there."
Evelyn nodded. "Alright."
An arm blocked their path.
"Vincent," Alexander's voice was dangerously low, "go play a few rounds with your brother."
Vincent shrank back. "I can't possibly beat him—"
Ignoring the protest, Alexander locked eyes with Evelyn. "You're really walking away from Natalie's situation?"
"The dean will handle it." Evelyn's tone was flat. "Simon backing out changes nothing. We'll take it to court if needed. Right now, Natalie has more pressing concerns than remarrying."
She turned to Gregory. "Let's go."
"Stop." Alexander's laugh was bitter. "Use me and toss me aside? How efficient of you, Evelyn."
"I appreciate Mr. Hamilton's assistance." Her voice remained calm. "The dean will be informed of this favor."
"I did it for you."
"Then thank you, Mr. Hamilton."
"You know exactly why I helped."
"People's motives are hard to guess."
"Evelyn!" Alexander's voice cracked like a whip. "Must you speak to me like this?"
She paused. "Then... congratulations on your happy union?"
Annabelle Taylor went deathly pale. "Dr. Carter, you—"
"My infertility wasn't my fault." Evelyn met her gaze squarely. "Let's drop the pretenses between us. By the way, your friend Yvonne gave me quite the gift today—two properties in exchange for my signature. I've already signed."
Alexander's eyes turned glacial.
Annabelle stammered, "Alex, I had no idea Yvonne would—"
