Chapter 69
The female officer smirked. "Don't you know why he called her and not you?"
Annabelle Taylor bit her lip hard, nails digging into her palms. "Next time, it'll be me."
"What, you're hoping Mr. Hamilton gets arrested again?"
Annabelle's face stiffened.
Too afraid to argue with the officer, she redirected her anger toward Evelyn Carter.
"Dr. Carter," she said, clicking her heels closer with a fake smile. "Alexander is usually so reserved. Let me thank you on his behalf."
Evelyn leaned against the wall, her knuckles turning white.
She wished she could vanish.
But her injured leg slowed her down, and now this woman wouldn't let her go.
"Mhm." Evelyn kept moving toward the exit without looking back.
Annabelle's gaze lingered on her leg, lips curling in disdain. "That car barely grazed you. You're really milking it, huh?"
"Miss Taylor."
"What?"
"Stay away from me."
"Afraid I'll push you again?"
"No. I'm afraid I won’t be able to stop myself from slapping you."
Annabelle’s eyes widened. "You—"
"Listen carefully," Evelyn met her glare. "If you come at me again, don’t blame me for what happens."
Annabelle laughed, resting a hand on her belly. "I’m pregnant, Dr. Carter. If you lay a finger on me and something happens to my baby—"
"Don’t worry," Evelyn smirked. "I specialize in putting people like you in their place. You’ll be screaming in pain, but your baby will be just fine."
She suddenly turned to Alexander Hamilton. "Mr. Hamilton, control your dog. If she bites again, I’ll take down the owner too."
"Who are you calling a dog?!"
"The one who answered."
"Officer! She just publicly insulted me! That’s slander!"
The female officer shrugged. "Take it to civil court."
Evelyn scoffed. "Make sure the subpoena gets delivered to the OB-GYN department."
"You’ll regret this!"
"Stop with the empty threats," Evelyn narrowed her eyes. "Show me what the great Miss Taylor is really capable of."
Annabelle suddenly lashed out, aiming a vicious kick at Evelyn’s injured knee.
Alexander yanked her back.
"Have you lost your mind?!" he snapped.
"She insulted me!" Annabelle shrieked. "You’re taking her side?!"
"Enough!" Alexander shoved her into a chair. "Haven’t you embarrassed yourself enough?!"
The officer steadied Evelyn. "Let me walk you out."
This time, Evelyn didn’t refuse.
At the precinct entrance, the officer hailed her a cab.
"Thank you."
"Of course."
When the officer returned to the lobby, she gasped—
Annabelle had Alexander by his tie, the two of them locked in a violent struggle.
