Chapter 546

"Uncle, Auntie, I should get going."

Alexander Hamilton's gaze lingered on Evelyn Carter for a moment. Seeing her engaged in conversation with Andrew Anderson, he had no choice but to leave the hospital room alone.

Andrew exhaled in relief once the unwelcome visitor was gone and settled back onto the bed. "Your sister can be discharged in a couple of days. Will you stay at home during that time?"

"I'm afraid not," Evelyn rubbed her temples. "I have a pile of documents to review. Promises made must be kept."

Grace Anderson frowned with concern. "You're that busy? Don't overwork yourself."

"Don't worry, Mom. I know my limits," Evelyn reassured her. "I'll come home once work stabilizes."

Emily Anderson's eyes brightened. "Sis, I can help!"

"Focus on recovering first," Evelyn chuckled, pinching her sister's cheek. Turning to her parents, she added, "I need to go now. Call me immediately if anything comes up."

Andrew walked her to the door, scanning the hallway warily. "Is that kid really gone? He’s not lurking somewhere, is he?"

Evelyn stepped aside to give him a clear view. "See for yourself?"

Only after confirming the hallway was empty did Andrew relax. "There are plenty of good men out there. If he bothers you again, don’t give him the time of day."

The elevator descended directly to the 16th floor.

The doors opened, revealing Alexander’s figure.

"Has Uncle Andrew calmed down?" he asked softly.

Evelyn shook her head. "Between the news about his biological parents and you, he’s hardly in a good mood." She changed the subject abruptly. "Where’s the baby? Still at the hotel?"

"I didn’t trust anyone else with her," Alexander replied. "I asked the attendant who previously cared for her. She’s in Aunt Teresa’s room now."

Evelyn checked her watch. "We should head back soon. Miss Langley will probably arrive shortly."

Alexander nodded in understanding. "Leaving now?"

"Go tend to your wound first," Evelyn frowned at the gash on his temple. "You’ll scare the baby looking like that."

The blood had been wiped away, but the injury remained gruesome.

"Let me take you to the surgical department," she instinctively offered to guide him.

A flicker of warmth passed through Alexander’s eyes. "I can manage on my own. If Uncle Andrew sees us together..."

"...Fine. Go by yourself," Evelyn conceded.

"Go see the baby," Alexander murmured. "She cried terribly after you left."

Evelyn’s heart clenched.

A soft knock sounded on Teresa Taylor’s hospital room door.

Anthony Taylor assumed it was a nurse and was overjoyed upon seeing Evelyn. "It’s Terry!"

The room echoed with the baby’s bell-like laughter.

Teresa struggled to prop herself up, her gaze hungrily following her daughter.

"I came to check on the baby," Evelyn explained.

Anthony quickly stepped aside. "Come in."

In the crib, Baby Chloe was happily playing with the attendant. Upon spotting Evelyn, she immediately reached out her tiny arms to be held.

"Since when did you become such a crybaby?" Evelyn cradled her gently, noting the baby’s freshly changed clothes.

"Thank you for looking after her. What should I call you?"

"Just call me Auntie Huang," the attendant smiled. "She’s been very well-behaved—just extremely attached to you, Miss Carter."

Evelyn nuzzled the baby’s cheek. "Has she been fed?"

"Mr. Hamilton fed her himself," Auntie Huang said. "Miss Laurent offered to help, but he insisted on doing it."

Teresa watched the scene with glistening eyes. "Anthony, doesn’t this remind you of..."

Anthony’s voice trembled. "Exactly like back then."

Evelyn looked up, puzzled.

"You weighed only four pounds at birth," Teresa gestured with her hands. "Like a tiny kitten. The umbilical cord was wrapped around your neck—it terrified us. Your father cried like a child."

Her gaze tenderly traced Evelyn’s features. "Just like this baby, you rarely cried as an infant. You smiled at everyone."
