Chapter 717
Evelyn's fingers dug into the armrests of the chair, her knuckles turning white from the force. It was the only thing she could hold onto.
Footsteps grew louder.
She held her breath, ready to make noise to call for help.
The gang leader's expression darkened as he grabbed his underling by the collar. "Take her! Move!"
Evelyn suddenly stood and swung the chair with all her strength, smashing it into the leader's back.
Bang!
Caught off guard, the leader crashed to the ground.
Evelyn turned and bolted for the stairs.
The second floor had an emergency exit.
The thugs scrambled—some helping their leader up, others chasing after Evelyn.
Crash!
The warehouse doors were kicked open.
Sunlight pierced the darkness like a blade.
Alexander stood in the doorway, his shirt stained with blood, the bandages on his right hand soaked crimson.
Evelyn froze on the stairs, locking eyes with him.
"It's Alexander Hamilton!" the leader snarled in recognition. "Don't let him leave alive!"
The gangsters grabbed their weapons and closed in.
Alexander looked up at Evelyn, the corner of his mouth lifting slightly. "I'm here to take you home."
His voice was soft, but it made her eyes burn.
"Are you insane?" Her voice trembled. "You came here alone to die?"
Alexander didn't answer, only swept a cold gaze over the thugs. "Leave now, and you might live."
Evelyn understood his silent message.
She quietly stepped back, then seized the chaos to dash upstairs.
The sunlight outside was blinding.
Evelyn stumbled as she ran, her throat raw with pain.
"Help! Alexander is inside—"
Footsteps echoed from around the corner.
Evelyn looked up, her pupils shrinking.
Lydia stood there in a black dress, lips blood-red, flanked by four hulking bodyguards.
"Evelyn," she cooed sweetly, "where are you rushing off to?"
Evelyn took half a step back. "Lydia, what do you want?"
"I want to play a game." Lydia tilted her head. "Who do you think Alexander will choose?"
She clapped her hands, and the bodyguards immediately seized Evelyn.
"Let me go!" Evelyn struggled. "You don’t understand love at all!"
Lydia's smile vanished. "Shut up!" She gripped Evelyn's chin. "If it weren’t for you, I would’ve married Alexander by now!"
Evelyn met her gaze. "You could never have his child."
The words stabbed Lydia like a knife.
She raised her hand to strike but stopped midair.
"Trying to provoke me?" Lydia sneered. "You think I'm as stupid as Annabelle?"
Leaning in, she whispered in Evelyn's ear, "Today, I’ll make Alexander watch you die."
Police sirens wailed in the distance.
Lydia's face twisted. "Take her away!"
