Chapter 771
Images flashed through Alexander Hamilton's mind in an instant.
"No!" He emerged abruptly from behind the screen, his voice icy.
Evelyn Carter was about to accept the stranger's proposal. He couldn't stay seated any longer.
Liam Macmillan nearly jumped out of his chair at Alexander's sudden appearance. "Good heavens! Who was hiding back there?!"
Evelyn turned and frowned upon recognizing him. "Weren't you supposed to be home with the baby?"
"Ah!"
Baby Chloe giggled and waved her tiny hands excitedly at the sound of her mother's voice.
Liam stared at the bizarre scene, utterly bewildered. "What... what's going on here?"
He had been discussing medical equipment with Dr. Carter. How did a man and a child suddenly appear? Was this how business meetings worked now?
Before Evelyn could speak, Alexander cut in sharply. "Evelyn, you can reject me, but you can't just settle for anyone."
Only then did Evelyn realize the magnitude of his misunderstanding.
Liam, oblivious, added fuel to the fire. "Excuse me, sir, but who are you? What right do you have to interfere with Dr. Carter's decisions?"
"I'm her—" Alexander suddenly faltered.
Their relationship was too complicated to define. They lived under the same roof, occasionally shared a bed, yet had no official title. Calling them friends felt hollow, and claiming to be husband and wife wasn't something she had acknowledged.
"Let me introduce you," Evelyn broke the awkward silence. "This is my ex-husband, Alexander Hamilton." She gestured to the baby. "And this is a child we're temporarily caring for, as a favor to a friend."
Liam's jaw dropped. "Huh?!"
Alexander gave a stiff nod. "Mm."
The two men seemed to be competing in brevity.
Evelyn sighed and motioned for Alexander to join them with the baby. She explained the situation clearly.
Finally understanding, Liam felt like the most wronged man alive.
"I did initially consider pursuing Dr. Carter romantically," he admitted, sweating nervously. "But after learning she wasn't interested in marriage or children right now, I switched to discussing business. These surgical staplers are expensive, so I wanted to discuss them in person."
Recognizing Alexander, Liam feared losing the deal and grew even more anxious.
Alexander's expression froze as he took in the medical equipment and documents on the table.
He wished the ground would swallow him whole.
"Which company do you represent?" Alexander asked abruptly.
No one in Hudson City's business circles didn't know Alexander Hamilton.
Liam quickly named his company and ventured cautiously, "I heard Hamilton Group is expanding into new ventures?"
Evelyn suddenly remembered Alexander's previous discussions about hospital donations. So rumors had already spread.
"The bidding opens next month," Alexander said coldly.
Sensing danger, Liam shot Evelyn a pleading look.
She rubbed her temples. "I'll take the samples and reports back for review, but the final decision isn't mine to make."
Liam fled as if granted a pardon.
Baby Chloe giggled in her stroller, seemingly amused by the whole spectacle.
"Alright," Evelyn said, locking eyes with Alexander. "How did you find me here? I didn't notice anyone following me."
"What if I said it was intuition?" Alexander's gaze flickered.
Evelyn considered this. "I'd believe you."
Alexander's eyes brightened. "We're in sync."
"You've been here before," Evelyn said flatly. "It's not surprising you found it."
She had chosen this teahouse for the same reason—intuition.
Suddenly, Alexander understood. This was a place Andrew Anderson had frequented.
"I've recently been looking into medical equipment," he said gently. "Maybe I can help."
Evelyn recalled their late-night conversation in the study and arched a brow. "What kind of 'looking into'? Acquisitions or investments? I may not be as knowledgeable as you, but I understand the basics."
