Chapter 980
"Why would you think that?" Evelyn frowned slightly. "These things are usually planned. Do I strike you as someone who plans ahead?"
The memory of that unexpected night made her cheeks flush.
Alexander immediately grasped her hand, afraid she might change her mind. "How about we do something planned right now?" His gaze burned with intensity. "Want to see the nursery?"
This nursery had consumed countless hours of his effort.
The air purifier hummed day and night, ensuring not a trace of renovation odor lingered.
Evelyn pushed the door open and was instantly awestruck.
Floor-to-ceiling windows were etched with star and moon cutouts, sunlight filtering through to cast dappled patterns on the floor. Her fingers traced the glass. "It's beautiful."
A faint smile touched Alexander's lips as he pressed a switch by the bed.
The ceiling suddenly glowed with soft light, revealing adorable animal silhouettes that flickered in and out of view.
"One more thing." He pressed another button.
A gentle lullaby filled the room.
Evelyn instinctively rested a hand on her belly, her eyes crinkling with joy. "You even prepared prenatal music?"
Alexander switched to a cheerful nursery rhyme. "The instructor suggested familiar tunes as lullabies." He paused. "At least until they're old enough to sleep on their own."
"And what about Baby Chloe?" Evelyn teased. "She already sleeps independently."
Alexander considered this seriously. "If it's a girl, she can share the room with Chloe. Sisters should keep each other company."
Anticipation sparkled in his eyes.
Evelyn suppressed a laugh, indulging his fantasy. She gazed at the ceiling. "This melody sounds familiar."
"Mozart from our prenatal class," Alexander recited effortlessly. "It aids brain development."
They shared a smile, wrapped in the warmth of the moment.
A jarring ringtone shattered the tranquility.
Alexander answered with a frown, his expression shifting from stern to bemused.
"What happened?" Evelyn asked with concern.
"Victor got into an accident," he massaged his temples. "A sheep knocked his tractor into a ditch during his field research."
Evelyn's eyes widened. "Is he badly hurt?"
"Just a sprained ankle." Alexander sighed. "But his dramatic wailing terrified the villagers."
They exchanged a knowing glance.
"Should we tell Vivian?" Alexander asked.
Evelyn shook her head. "Let her ask first."
The next day, Vivian's call went straight to Alexander's phone.
"Victor? He's on leave," Alexander played coy.
Vivian's roar came through the speaker: "Tell him to lock his damn door next time! His keys are still in the lock!"
