Chapter 73

Evelyn's fingers twisted together unconsciously.

Her stomach churned with unease.

She hadn't registered for an appointment when getting medication from Olivia this time.

The central hospital's system showed no record of her surgery.

Technically, Olivia had violated protocol for her.

Evelyn bit her lip. "If the director asks, tell him I forced you. Say I used my position as your mentor to pressure you."

Olivia wrung her hands anxiously. "Dr. Carter, I can't possibly—"

"Do it." Evelyn cut her off. "Don't worry about me."

Ten minutes later, a knock sounded at the office door.

Olivia's shoulders hunched visibly as she went to answer. "D-Director, good afternoon."

The director raised an eyebrow. "Do I frighten you that much?"

"N-no..." Olivia forced a laugh. "Just professional respect for authority."

He chuckled. "Most young people these days have rebellious streaks. You're refreshingly proper."

Olivia ducked her head sheepishly.

As the director entered, Evelyn pushed herself up from the desk. "Director."

He waved her back down. "Still recovering from the leg injury?"

"It doesn't affect my work. Just slows my walking. Consultations and surgeries aren't an issue."

"Who said anything about firing you?" The director smiled. "Focus on healing. Let your assistant handle the running around. Our OB-GYN department still needs you."

"You flatter me."

"Just stating facts." His expression turned serious. "By the way, blood bank supplies are low. Join the bloodmobile team—you can work seated and get some fresh air."

Evelyn frowned slightly. "Director, was there something you needed?"

"I have good news to share early." His eyes sparkled. "We've recruited an anesthesiology specialist returning from abroad. He turned down higher salaries and even provincial hospitals to join us."

"An anesthesiologist?"

"Exactly. Reports to OB-GYN tomorrow." The director beamed. "Make sure you keep him happy here."

Evelyn nodded. "I'll do my best."

The director gestured toward the door. "Come meet your new colleague—Dr. Wilson, come in."

The door opened.

A tall, broad-shouldered man entered in a crisp suit, his calm gaze steady behind gold-rimmed glasses.

He extended a hand. "Dr. Carter. Long time no see."

Evelyn froze.

The director introduced, "This is Dr. Gregory Wilson, our new anesthesiology specialist. Dr. Wilson, meet Dr. Evelyn Carter from OB-GYN."

Gregory's lips curved. "I see you remember me?"

Evelyn mechanically shook his hand. "Why would you—"

"Not welcome?"

"No..." She withdrew her hand. "With your credentials, you could work anywhere."

Gregory adjusted his glasses. "First, my family is here in H City. Second..." His gaze lingered on her. "An anesthesiologist needs the right partner. I value collaboration."

Evelyn looked away.

The director noticed the tension. "You two know each other? When Dr. Wilson requested OB-GYN, I assumed it was because of you."

Evelyn's head snapped up. "You told the director we're acquainted?"
