Chapter 250
The operating room lights were already on when Evelyn Carter arrived at the hospital.
Olivia Lightfoot hurried toward her, clutching a medical chart. "Natalie Stapleton is showing signs of miscarriage. The fetus has abnormal development. We need to terminate the pregnancy immediately."
This outcome was expected.
The fetus in Natalie's womb had been malformed from the start. Combined with those dubious folk remedies from the Stapleton family, survival was never a possibility.
But no one anticipated it would happen so suddenly.
Vivian Dempsey stood at the end of the hallway, her hands stained with blood, voice trembling. "Evelyn..."
"I know." Evelyn strode toward the operating room. "Go rest."
The usually fearless Vivian was pale, her fingertips still shaking slightly.
Evelyn handed her a pack of wet wipes. "Let a nurse help you clean up."
Olivia had already prepared surgical scrubs. They quickly disinfected and changed.
Inside the OR, Gregory Wilson was adjusting the anesthesia equipment.
"Low blood pressure. Significant blood loss," he said without looking up.
Evelyn checked the monitor. "Did the family sign the consent form?"
"Not yet."
Olivia stamped her foot in frustration. "That bastard Simon isn't answering his phone!"
"Keep trying." Evelyn pulled on her gloves. "We save lives first."
Gregory gripped her wrist. "No family signature means high risk."
"We can't wait."
"Simon Stapleton is the type to cause trouble afterward."
Evelyn smirked. "Let him."
"The hospital director—"
"I'm a doctor," Evelyn cut him off. "Saving lives is my duty."
The monitor emitted a shrill alarm.
Blood pressure continued to drop.
Gregory gave her a long look. "Are you sure?"
"Administer anesthesia."
"Fine."
The anesthetic flowed slowly into the IV.
Evelyn tightened her grip on the scalpel, resolve steady in her gaze.
In this moment, only the Hippocratic Oath remained in her mind.
