Chapter 491

Emily Anderson's accident right after returning home was too coincidental.

Evelyn Carter clenched the bedsheet, a nauseating figure flashing through her mind. "It's Peter Harrison."

Alexander Hamilton smirked coldly. "Last time you came to me, wasn't it because he threatened your sister?"

"He has no moral boundaries." Evelyn's fingers trembled. "She's my only sister..."

"Give me your phone."

Alexander gripped her wrist. "And then what? Confront Peter or call the police? If he dared do this, he's already planned his exit. Even if we catch the perpetrator, it won't lead back to him."

Evelyn punched the bedside. "So he just gets away with it?"

"Better an open enemy than a false friend."

Suddenly, Evelyn recalled last night's muffled phone call. "You reinstated him?"

"Yes."

"..."

"Peter is clever—he skirts the edge of the law every time. Even if we trace this to him, he'll just pay some medical compensation." Alexander's eyes darkened. "Unless he's dead or rotting in prison, your family will never have peace."

Evelyn's eyes reddened. "Why do the wicked always win?"

"Remember what happened to Simon Stapleton?" Alexander's lips curved. "Peter's time is coming."

"...Thank you."

Recalling her previous rejections, an odd feeling stirred in Evelyn's chest. He'd been setting this up all along.

Alexander raised a brow. "Should I say 'you're welcome'?"

"Whatever."

"Don't forget about the seafood." He leaned in abruptly, his breath brushing her ear. "I have an excellent memory."

Evelyn's ears burned. "...I know."

A sudden knock interrupted them.

Alexander's expression turned icy. "Stay put. I'll handle it."

"What if it's a doctor?"

He glanced at the mountain of fruit baskets on the table. "These people have noses sharper than bloodhounds."

Evelyn understood. The rare appearance of Hamilton Group's CEO at the summit had vultures circling. Tracking him to the hospital took skill.

"Come in."

The door opened to reveal Lydia Laurent holding a thermal container, hesitating at the threshold. "Alexander... Evelyn."

Seeing her, Alexander's demeanor softened slightly.

"Evelyn, are you feeling better?" Lydia hurried to the bedside. "I had the chef make congee specially for you."

The aroma of plain congee wafted from the container. Evelyn accepted a small bowl. "Perfect timing. I'm starving."

"Dad says girls should eat warm congee when they're sick." Lydia blinked. "Alexander's friends are my friends too."

Evelyn's hand paused mid-scoop. That phrasing... didn't sound like Lydia.

Alexander's eyes flickered. Leonard Laurent, that old fox, must've heard about him carrying Evelyn out of the hotel and couldn't sit still.

"Oh," Lydia added suddenly, "Dad said it's inappropriate for him to visit as a man, but he hopes you don't mind, Alexander."
