Chapter 194

Peter Harrison's voice came through the phone. "What's wrong?"

"I'm currently renting in that neighborhood."

Peter chuckled. "What a coincidence. If Uncle Andrew and Aunt Grace move there too, your whole family could live in the same community."

Evelyn Carter gave a soft hum of agreement.

"I can help you pack these next couple of days. We can move everything over the weekend."

"No need to trouble yourself. We've already hired movers."

"Movers are usually male workers. With just you and Emily there, I don't feel comfortable leaving you alone. It's better to have a man around for situations like this."

Evelyn initially thought Peter was overreacting.

Until moving day arrived.

The moment the movers stepped inside, their demeanor shifted.

Seven or eight burly men crowded into the cramped living room, making the air feel oppressive.

The leader, a cigarette dangling from his lips, quoted an outrageous price. "This is the number. Take it or leave it."

Andrew Anderson slammed his hand on the table. "That's enough to buy a brand-new fridge! We're not moving anymore. Get out."

"Leave?" The man blew out a smoke ring. "After all my boys wasted a trip? At least pay for the gas."

"You didn't move a single thing, and you want money?"

"That's the rule."

Evelyn stood by the window, looking down.

The familiar white Cayenne wasn't parked in its usual spot today.

The irony struck her.

She and Alexander Hamilton were always out of sync.

When she wanted to build a life together, he chose someone else.

When she started anew, he came back to complicate things.

Now, when she needed help, he was nowhere to be found.

The phone rang abruptly.

"Evelyn? Have the movers arrived?"

"Peter."

Andrew and Grace immediately gathered around. "Is that Peter?"

Evelyn put the call on speaker.

Peter's calm voice filled the room. "My mom's place is all settled. Aunt Grace, do you need me to come over?"
