Chapter 229
Peter Harrison turned to her. "You look pale. Did I say something wrong?"
Evelyn Carter leaned back against the seat and closed her eyes. "No. Just a long day of surgeries. I'm tired."
"Rest for a bit. I'll wake you when we arrive."
"Peter."
"Hmm?"
"Is your company hosting an event soon?"
He chuckled softly. "I was just about to tell you. The project succeeded, so the boss arranged a celebration at Crown KTV. Spouses are invited." He paused. "I'd like you to meet my colleagues."
Her fingers twitched. "Oh."
"You seem off today."
"Will there... be drinking?"
"It's a celebration. Hard to avoid. You don't drink?"
"I can handle a little, but I get drunk easily."
Peter squeezed her hand with a smile. "Don't worry. I'll be there."
Evelyn turned to watch the rain streaking the window. "Okay."
"Should I pick you up on Saturday?"
"I might be on duty. There are a lot of high-risk pregnancies lately."
"Evelyn, you should—"
The car jerked to a stop.
Under the dim glow of the hospital entrance lights, Evelyn lifted her gaze. "What's wrong?"
Peter narrowed his eyes. "Is that... Alexander?"
Through the downpour, a solitary figure stood in the parking lot. Rain dripped from his hair, the cigarette between his fingers long extinguished.
A passing security guard shook his head.
"He comes every day."
"Waits for hours without calling. Pathetic."
Her phone buzzed.
Vivian Dempsey's voice came through clearly. "Evelyn, Alexander agreed. He asked about your schedule—I told him you either leave at dawn or pull all-nighters. Let him guess."
The car fell dead silent.
In her periphery, Peter stared at the figure in the rain, his lips curving into an unfamiliar smile. His fingers tapped lightly against the steering wheel, his eyes glinting with something dark.
