Chapter 239
Evelyn Carter frowned slightly. "Your department's team-building event only has four people?"
Peter Harrison rested his hand gently on her shoulder, his touch firm yet unyielding. "Let's talk inside."
The car door shut behind him with a dull thud.
He walked around to the driver's seat and fastened his seatbelt. "Mr. Harrison's wife is an older first-time mother. When he heard you're an OB-GYN specialist, he arranged this dinner."
The car pulled slowly out of the parking lot.
"She could just make an appointment at the hospital," Evelyn said, watching the scenery blur past the window.
"Forty and pregnant for the first time—it's natural to be nervous." Peter adjusted the steering wheel. "Consider it an opportunity to have the boss owe you a favor."
Evelyn pressed her lips together. "Turning a team event into a private dinner—won't the others complain?"
"Don't worry. Mr. Harrison approved overtime pay for everyone."
The restaurant was tucked deep within a garden on the city outskirts.
Bamboo groves lined the cobblestone path, and distant figures were barely visible in the lakeside pavilion.
At the door of the largest private room, Peter suddenly paused. "Just relax. Treat it like dinner with friends."
When the door opened, Evelyn's gaze locked instantly with Alexander Hamilton's piercing eyes.
She instinctively stepped back, only for Peter to steady her with a hand at her waist.
"Mr. Harrison, Mrs. Harrison," Peter said cheerfully. "This is my fiancée, Evelyn Carter."
The heavyset Mr. Harrison stood immediately. "We've heard so much about Dr. Carter! My wife has been worried sick about irregular fetal movements lately."
Beside him, the pregnant woman struggled to rise from her seat.
Evelyn hurried forward to stop her. "Please, don't get up."
In her peripheral vision, Alexander's long fingers traced the rim of his teacup.
"I thought this was a team-building event?" Evelyn heard the tension in her own voice.
Peter pulled out a chair with a smile. "Mr. Hamilton is an investor in our new project. Since everyone was free tonight, Mr. Harrison arranged this gathering."
Under the crystal chandelier, Alexander's suit gleamed coldly.
He spoke suddenly. "Dr. Carter. It's been a while."
The air turned to ice.
Mr. Harrison looked between them in surprise. "You two know each other?"
"Ex-husband." Evelyn said the words calmly, watching Peter's smile freeze. "Peter didn't mention it?"
