Chapter 126
"Evelyn! You—"
Evelyn Carter calmly set down the empty cup and picked up another full one, her gaze icy. "Say it again. I dare you."
The doorway of the lab was already crowded with onlookers, their hushed whispers rising and falling like waves.
Annabelle Taylor clutched her soaked blouse as she stumbled back, shrieking, "Simon! Simon Stapleton!"
The hallway remained empty. No response.
"Simon, you spineless coward!" Annabelle trembled with rage. "I stood up for your family, and now you won’t even show your face?!"
Still, silence.
Evelyn gave the urine sample cup a slight shake. Annabelle immediately turned and fled, shouting over her shoulder, "You’ll regret this! Alexander will make you pay!"
Olivia Lightfoot fumed. "Dr. Carter, why didn’t you chase her and throw another cup?"
Evelyn placed the cup back in the testing tray. "Know when to stop. A doctor publicly dousing a patient? How would I keep my reputation if that got out?"
Olivia leaned in to examine the spilled sample. "This one belongs to Wendy West..."
"Already tested." Evelyn pointed to the report on the counter.
Olivia’s eyes lit up. "You prepared this in advance?"
"I couldn’t delay the patient’s results."
"This is so satisfying!" Olivia clapped her hands excitedly. "That Annabelle has been throwing tantrums everywhere just because she’s pregnant. Serves her right! How did you come up with this?"
A faint smirk touched Evelyn’s lips. "I’ve been thinking about it for a while."
"Wait, really?"
"Surprised?"
Olivia shook her head vigorously. "She deserved it! Ruining someone else’s marriage and still acting so entitled..."
"I just couldn’t stand her." Evelyn’s voice was soft.
During lunch break, her phone buzzed.
Alexander Hamilton’s number.
"Calling to blame me?"
A pause on the other end. "Blame you for what?"
"Annabelle didn’t tattle?"
"She went to see you again?"
He didn’t know?
After all her threats, she’d stayed silent?
"Get to the point."
Alexander’s breathing was heavy. "What did she do to you?"
"None of your concern."
"..."
"Keep your people in check."
"Evelyn," Alexander’s voice suddenly turned hoarse, "Grandma is critical. She wants to see you one last time."
