Chapter 357
"Miss Taylor."
The familiar voice made Annabelle whirl around. Her eyes widened, feigned delight quickly spreading across her face. "Oh my god, Dr. Carter? What are you doing in England?"
Evelyn watched her performance coldly.
Her acting had improved.
Whoever trained this spoiled heiress had done a remarkable job.
"I'm here for work," Evelyn replied flatly.
"That's wonderful! With your skills, you'll surely make a name for yourself here."
"Thanks."
A pregnant woman nearby interjected curiously, "Darling, you know this doctor?"
Annabelle's smile faltered for a split second. "Yes. She treated me after my car accident back home. She's renowned in Hudson City."
The woman immediately brightened. "What a coincidence!" She turned to her husband with a pout. "I want Dr. Carter handling my prenatal care. Go arrange it."
The man sighed and left obediently.
Annabelle eagerly rummaged through a cabinet. "Dr. Carter, try these preserved plums? I brought them from home."
Evelyn didn't take them.
"Maybe doctors don't like cured foods," Annabelle explained awkwardly.
The pregnant woman chimed in, "I'll have my family send something else—"
"Unnecessary." Evelyn turned to leave.
"Dr. Carter—"
Annabelle chased her into the hallway, blocking her path.
"What do you want?"
"Is Alexander in England too?"
"No idea."
"He must be." Annabelle lowered her voice. "He came looking for you, didn't he? Do you know how much work he's neglected because of you? The entire Hamilton Group's projects are delayed..."
"So you're here to blame me?"
"I wouldn't dare."
Evelyn smirked. "No audience now. Drop the act. I remember everything that happened on that cruise."
Annabelle's expression shifted instantly.
Her lips curled. "Then let me be blunt. What spell did you cast on my parents? Why are they suddenly treating you so well?"
"Ask them yourself."
"I did!" Annabelle seethed. "They just said they're atoning for my sins. But I saw them amend their will—they're leaving everything to you! That makes no sense!"
"What do you think the reason is?"
"You threatened them, didn't you?" Her eyes darkened. "Using Alexander as leverage? One word from you, and he'd discard me without hesitation, right?"
"I don't have that kind of influence."
"Stop pretending!" Annabelle's composure cracked. "You hate me! You hate that I almost killed you! Now you're taking revenge—stealing my family's fortune and making Alexander abandon me!"
Evelyn met her gaze icily. "Exactly. I'm taking everything from the Taylors, then having Alexander throw you out. Just wait and see."
