Chapter 220
The moment she hung up, Evelyn Carter felt a heaviness in her chest.
Gregory Wilson handed her a glass of lemon water. "Let Vivian handle the inquiries. She has connections."
"Mm."
"How about a game while we wait?"
Her phone buzzed suddenly.
Gregory raised an eyebrow. "Vivian works fast."
"No, it's my boyfriend."
His smile froze for a split second. "Here to pick you up? Go ahead and answer."
Evelyn gave him an apologetic nod before stepping aside to take the call. "Peter?"
"I went to the hospital, but your colleagues said you're at a gathering?"
"Finished with work?"
"Just wrapped up. Thought I'd take you home. Is the party ending soon?"
"Almost."
"Send me your location."
"Okay."
She forwarded the address.
Gregory polished his cue. "Why not invite him to join? The hospital isn't far."
"He spends all day in the lab. Doubt he plays."
"Perfect chance to meet. The whole hospital knows I've been pursuing you. Better he hears it from me than through gossip."
After a brief hesitation, Evelyn agreed.
She texted Peter again, telling him to come straight in.
About ten minutes later, the lounge bar's door swung open.
Peter Harrison scanned the room, his gaze landing first on Simon Stapleton and the girl in pink.
"Simon!" He strode over with a grin.
Simon stood to greet him. "What brings you here?"
They exchanged a familiar handshake, their camaraderie unmistakable.
Gregory shot Evelyn a meaningful look. "Your boyfriend and Simon are close?"
Evelyn was equally stunned.
The four of them had been high school classmates, but Simon's character...
Gregory's expression grew scrutinizing.
Her phone rang again.
"Evelyn, I'm here. Where are you?"
"Look left."
Peter stood and finally spotted her by the pool table, waving. "There you are."
As he approached, he noticed the man beside her. "And this is?"
"Dr. Wilson from our hospital."
Peter extended a hand. "Nice to meet you, Dr. Wilson."
Gregory didn't immediately respond.
The air thickened for several seconds.
Just as Peter began retracting his hand, Gregory suddenly grasped it. "Peter Harrison."
Peter blinked. "How did you— Did Evelyn mention me?"
"In a way."
Peter naturally took Evelyn's hand. "You look familiar, Doctor."
Gregory's gaze lingered on their intertwined fingers. "My photo's on the hospital billboard."
"No wonder. Impressive for someone so young to be the face of the institution."
Gregory smirked. "Play pool?"
"I know the basics. Care for a game?"
Gregory turned to Evelyn, his lips curling in a knowing smile.
His eyes said it all: That's not what you told me earlier.
