Chapter 65
Margaret Hamilton's call had just ended when Evelyn Carter's phone buzzed urgently again.
An unfamiliar number flashed on the screen.
Assuming it was an emergency patient, Evelyn hastily bid farewell to her mother-in-law and answered.
A stern voice spoke: "Ms. Carter, this is the H City Police Department."
——
In the police station lobby, Evelyn limped forward with difficulty, her injured leg slowing her progress.
A female officer hurried over to support her. "Do you need assistance?"
"I'm here to bail out Alexander Hamilton."
"You are Mr. Hamilton's...?"
Evelyn hesitated.
The divorce papers hadn't been finalized yet. Legally, they were still married.
But in reality, their marriage had long been dead.
As she struggled for words, Alexander emerged from the interrogation room, accompanied by a male officer.
The male officer eyed Evelyn. "Here to file a report?"
The female officer clarified, "She's here for Mr. Hamilton's bail."
The man raised an eyebrow. "Family? Sister?"
"My wife," Alexander said quietly.
The two officers exchanged glances. The female officer couldn't resist asking, "Then what about the pregnant woman earlier—"
"Ex-wife," Evelyn cut in. "She's the current one."
The male officer scoffed. "Bail requires immediate family. An ex-wife doesn't count."
"We haven't finalized the divorce yet."
The officer gave Alexander a meaningful look. "So you're still legally married."
The female officer's eyes widened. "Not even divorced, and the new flame is already pregnant?"
Evelyn had no interest in explaining further. "Where do I sign?"
The female officer handed her a form. "Over here."
Leaning against the wall, Evelyn slowly made her way to the desk. Alexander moved to help, but she declined. "No need for your concern, Mr. Hamilton."
She carefully filled out her personal information, pausing briefly at the "Relationship" field before finally writing "Spouse."
"Done."
The female officer took the form. "One moment—I'll get the receipt."
Alexander spoke up quickly. "Let me. Her leg—"
The male officer stopped him. "You're not free to move until the paperwork is complete. I'll handle it."
Evelyn nodded politely. "Thank you."
The waiting area was tucked in a corner.
Evelyn continued her slow journey along the wall. Alexander followed at a respectful distance—close enough to catch her if she fell, but not so close as to intrude.
Those few meters felt endless.
When she finally sat down, Alexander chose the seat beside hers, leaving one space between them.
"Your leg injury—"
"Don't apologize." Evelyn cut him off. "Every time we've met since deciding to divorce, you've said sorry. I've heard enough."
