Chapter 956

Poaching talent wasn't like digging up turnips. Evelyn Carter knew even with preparations, the candidate could still walk away. With no guarantees yet, she remained cautious—never making promises she couldn't keep.

Vivian Dempsey smirked. "You have too much faith in him."

"It's not faith." Evelyn pressed her lips. "Just facts. His professional competence speaks for itself."

For once, Vivian nodded. "I used to be biased against Alexander Hamilton, but even I admit two things about him are flawless—his looks and his work ethic. For this campus recruitment, I'm going personally. Anyone meeting one criterion gets an offer."

Graduation season approached. While Hudson City couldn't rival the capital, it boasted several prestigious universities. The Dempsey Group, as a reputable corporation, had no trouble securing a recruitment booth.

Evelyn chuckled. "We're not casting actors. Why prioritize looks?"

Vivian had always valued appearances, and past heartbreaks only raised her standards. Her ideal man needed both striking looks and impeccable character.

"Seeing a handsome face daily lifts my mood. If compatible, he might even become a live-in son-in-law. That'd ease Dad and Grandma's worries."

Since Grandma Dempsey's accident, the elderly woman remained open-minded. But Vivian had matured overnight, determined to reassure her family.

Understanding her friend's intent, Evelyn advised, "Don't rush this. Find someone trustworthy—no need to lose the dowry and the bride."

Vivian's eyes lit up. "Speaking of which, our high school reunion's coming up. Tenth anniversary—even overseas classmates are returning."

A decade had passed in a blink. Evelyn hesitated. "Aside from bumping into our class president, I've lost touch with everyone."

She studied Vivian's expression carefully. Had it not been for that third-place schemer, Vivian—with her family background and grades—could've soared higher.

"Maybe check the attendee list first?" Evelyn suggested tactfully. Truthfully, Vivian was well-liked; only one person needed avoiding.

Vivian saw through her concern and laughed. "Relax. Simon Stapleton was ruined by Alexander. I can't even recall his face now—wouldn't recognize him if he stood before me."

Evelyn held her gaze. "Your words. Then I won't accompany you—spares me the interrogation."

"Focus on your pregnancy." Vivian met her eyes steadily. "I can handle it."

Evelyn remained skeptical. With a month until the reunion, there was time to arrange backup through old classmates if Vivian insisted on going.

Two days later, Alexander returned unexpectedly.

Post-rain sunshine bathed the Hamilton estate's garden in gentle light, the air fragrant with greenery. Breathing deeply by the newly installed swing, Evelyn heard footsteps.

"Off work early?" Assuming it was Vivian, she teased without turning.

"Missed you, so came home first." The deep voice startled her.

Alexander's smiling face greeted her when she turned. He wasn't due back for two more days.

"Wrapped things up ahead of schedule. Left Emily to handle the rest and brought Baby Chloe home." He glossed over the Langley parents' grief. "They didn't blame her, but... couldn't bear to care for her."

Evelyn understood the unspoken truth. For grandparents mourning their daughter, a granddaughter carrying their enemy's blood made kinship unbearably painful.
