Chapter 723
Flames devoured everything around them. Alexander Hamilton gripped Evelyn Carter's hand in the inferno, his voice hoarse but firm. "The bank safe deposit box code is 1128. Attorney Grant from Legal holds the important documents..."
Evelyn stood in the bank's VIP room, her fingertips trembling slightly.
The manager respectfully slid a stack of documents toward her. "Ms. Carter, these are the equity transfer agreements personally signed by Mr. Hamilton. Once you sign, 50% of Hamilton Group shares will be yours."
She stared at the familiar signature on the papers, her chest tightening.
1128—their wedding date.
"I need time to consider." Evelyn pushed the documents back. "Please continue safeguarding them."
Sunlight stung her eyes as she exited the bank. Alexander had just handed her half his empire.
The Hamilton Group headquarters buzzed with activity, but tension hung thick in the air. Employees scurried with heads down, glued to their phones.
"Mrs. Hamilton." The receptionist hurried over. "Emily Zade is waiting for you."
The private elevator ascended directly to the top floor. Instead of heading to the office, Evelyn detoured to Legal.
Attorney Grant was organizing files when he spotted her, visibly startled. "You've come."
This unremarkable middle-aged man was Alexander's most trusted legal advisor.
"Mr. Hamilton instructed," Grant said, retrieving a kraft envelope from the safe, "that if you ever came looking for me, I should give you this."
The words "Suicide Note" glared from the envelope.
"When?" Evelyn's voice strained.
"Three years ago." Grant adjusted his glasses. "He said if he remained safe, this document would stay sealed forever."
Three years—shortly after their wedding.
Emily Zade rushed in. "I knew you'd be here, Mrs. Hamilton. The board demands—"
"Not yet." Evelyn cut her off, tearing open the envelope.
The will's thoroughness chilled her—real estate, stocks, funds, even charity projects established in her name. Alexander had planned out her entire future.
"How thoughtful of him." Evelyn gave a bitter smile, tracing his signature at the document's end.
Two more letters lay inside. One bore a wax seal marked "For Evelyn's Eyes Only." The other appointed her interim CEO.
Bang!
The office door shuddered under violent knocking.
"Mrs. Hamilton!" A project director shouted outside. "The board insists on an emergency meeting immediately!"
Emily paled. "They're making their move."
Evelyn stuffed the suicide note into her bag and drew a deep breath. "Let's go greet them."
The wax-sealed letter burned in her palm. What had Alexander been thinking that rainy night three years ago?
