Chapter 468
"So... you were faking that fainting spell earlier?"
Alexander Hamilton leaned against the sofa, his face still slightly pale. "In the business world, some social obligations are unavoidable. But I've always maintained my integrity—no one dares pressure me into anything."
Evelyn Carter gave a slight nod, uninterested in probing further.
She hadn't pried into his private affairs during their marriage, let alone now.
"Sophia Winston has had it rough," Alexander suddenly remarked. "At least your adoptive parents gave you an education and a chance to change your fate. Many girls aren't even afforded that opportunity."
Evelyn arched a brow. "You two seem close."
"When Annabelle got married abroad, I often talked with Sophia." His gaze held hers steadily. "But we're just friends. Nothing inappropriate."
"You should be telling that to Lydia Laurent."
A flicker of hope crossed his eyes. "That day when you saw Sophia with me, did you—"
"I don’t care." Evelyn cut him off cleanly. "A single man like you having women around is normal. As long as Lydia doesn’t mind."
She deliberately twisted the knife. "When’s the wedding?"
Alexander’s expression darkened instantly.
Ding-dong—
The deliveryman’s voice shattered the tension.
Evelyn accepted the seafood order, surprised to find it fully cooked. "Did the restaurant mess up?"
Alexander evaded. "Maybe."
"Then I don’t need to cook." She turned to leave.
"Wait!" He grabbed the takeout bag. "You promised to make seafood for me."
"Reheating will ruin it."
"Then just plate it."
He dumped the containers onto the dining table. "We’ll eat it like this."
Evelyn sighed. "I don’t eat seafood."
"Keep me company." His eyes narrowed. "You might still need my help with Grandma Duan’s matter."
Reluctantly, she sat down.
The corner of his mouth lifted. "Next time, I’ll let you showcase your skills."
"Auntie Marry cooks better."
"But you promised me."
Evelyn didn’t bother arguing. "Vivian still hasn’t replied."
Alexander stood to fetch disinfectant spray, expertly sanitizing their hands with practiced ease.
"You used to force me to do this. Now it’s a habit." He laughed at himself.
Evelyn stayed silent.
"After the Hamilton Group transition, what’s your plan?" He changed the subject.
"Considering auditing some management courses."
"Textbooks and real-world experience are different." His tone turned serious. "I can help."
She shook her head. "I need time to think."
"Switching from medicine to business does take courage."
As he mentally strategized how to block Gregory Wilson’s interference, Evelyn abruptly derailed his thoughts:
"You sound perfectly healthy now. Stomachache gone?"
Alexander stiffened. "Much better."
Evelyn smirked. "So the fainting was an act?"
"I was genuinely lightheaded earlier." He defended. "I’ve recovered now."
"Ah." Her nod was loaded with meaning. "Then I went easy on you during the exam."
Alexander grimaced. "Thank you for your mercy, Dr. Carter."
