Chapter 110

Natalie Stapleton curled up in the backseat, her wedding dress soaked with cold sweat. Her lips were ghostly pale, almost translucent.

"E-Evelyn..."

Evelyn Carter glanced in the rearview mirror. A stark crimson stain was spreading across the white fabric.

Natalie trembled as she clutched the seat. "Blood... so much blood..."

"Five more minutes." Evelyn jerked the steering wheel, tires screeching against the asphalt.

"The baby... is it gone?" Natalie's voice shattered like glass.

Evelyn's knuckles whitened around the wheel.

At this stage of pregnancy, she knew better than anyone how dire the bleeding could be.

"The hospital has the best equipment. Trust me."

A phone ringtone blared abruptly.

Annabelle Taylor gripped the seatbelt, shrieking, "Don't answer! You're driving like a maniac!"

Evelyn floored the accelerator. "One more word and you're walking!"

She yanked out her phone with one hand. The hospital director's frantic voice crackled through. "How's Natalie?"

"Likely needs surgery." Evelyn took a sharp turn. "Get the groom here to sign the forms. Now."

At the ER entrance, Olivia Lightfoot stood ready with the trauma team.

"Dr. Carter?!" Olivia's eyes widened at the sight of Evelyn behind the wheel.

"Prep the OR." Evelyn swiftly transferred Natalie onto a stretcher. "Get her to ultrasound first."

Olivia gasped at the bloodstains. "Threatened miscarriage?"

"Tell the blood bank to stand by." Evelyn ripped open the wedding dress to examine her. "Contractions are too frequent."

The stretcher raced toward the emergency corridor.

Evelyn turned to leave when a shrill voice froze her in place.

"What about me?" Annabelle leaned against the car door, gagging. "I'm pregnant too!"

Evelyn tossed the car keys without looking back. "Move the car."

"You expect me to park in this state?" Annabelle screeched. "I'm dizzy and nauseous!"

"Call a driver then." Evelyn's white coat billowed as she walked. "We can't block the ambulance lane."

"Evelyn! You—"

"Either move it," Evelyn spun at the elevator, eyes sharp as blades, "or I'll have security tow it."
