Chapter 276
Yvonne narrowed her eyes, a mocking smile curling her lips. "So you were there that day too?"
"Mm."
"Ha! And yet you pretend to be so magnanimous? Talking about how arranged marriages lack emotional foundations—when you’re clearly eaten up with jealousy. Did you secretly follow Alexander and Annabelle to their reunion?"
"Alexander took me there."
"Then why didn’t he introduce you to everyone? Instead, he stuck to Annabelle like glue. Everyone thought they were the couple." Yvonne suddenly laughed. "How pathetic—your own husband pining after another woman... Tell me, does he ever call you by the wrong name when you’re intimate?"
"You—!" Vivian slammed her hands on the table and shot to her feet.
Yvonne raised a challenging brow. "What, did I say something wrong?"
"Watch your mouth!"
"Oh, this is too much for you? The Qing dynasty fell ages ago! Or are you still stuck in feudal times?" Yvonne crossed her arms, looking down her nose at Vivian. "Want to hit me? Just make sure you’ve got the money for medical bills and emotional damages. Or go ahead and curse at me—I’m clinically depressed. After you’re done, I’ll slit my wrists."
Vivian trembled with rage. "Birds of a feather flock together. No surprise a homewrecker’s friend is just as vile."
Beep.
Yvonne pulled a recorder from her bag and hit save.
"Miss Dempsey, I’ve got all your lovely words on tape. Later, I’ll write a suicide note blaming your verbal abuse for triggering my depression." Her smile turned sinister. "Don’t worry, I won’t cut too deep. Just enough to land me in the ER—maybe even under Dr. Carter’s care."
Vivian’s eyes widened. "You planned this? You baited me on purpose?"
"Occupational habit." Yvonne waved the recorder. "Dr. Taylor’s much smarter—she didn’t say a word. But you? You’re just a pawn, and you don’t even realize it."
"Bullshit! Nothing you say could ever come between Evelyn and me!"
"Then we’ll let the police sort it out."
"Miss Young—" Evelyn spoke up suddenly.
Yvonne turned. "Yes, Dr. Carter?"
"I’ll sign the agreement. I’m leaving the country soon anyway."
Yvonne scoffed. "Spare me the act. You’re just after the money."
Evelyn signed swiftly and slid the document back. "Care to check?"
Yvonne skimmed it before snapping the folder shut. "I’ll hold you to that. And I’ll keep this recording. If I catch you near Alexander again..." She shot a meaningful glance at Vivian.
Vivian ground her teeth. "A lawyer resorting to underhanded tricks. How enlightening."
"Flattered." Yvonne smirked.
"You’re welcome!"
"The deed will be mailed to the hospital. Be sure to sign for it, Dr. Carter." Yvonne twirled the recorder. "Annabelle’s too soft. If it were up to me, you’d suffer what she did... How about I arrange some fun with a few Black guys? Ha!"
Before she finished, Evelyn lifted her phone from beneath the table. "Hear all that?"
Yvonne paled. "Who are you talking to?!"
"Alexander."
Yvonne froze. "You—"
Vivian clapped in delight. "Ohhh, scared now? You get to record, but we can’t make a call? Alexander, your legal counsel just threatened Evelyn. Care to comment?"
Yvonne lunged for the phone.
Vivian blocked her. "What, trying to silence her? Alexander, she’s attacking Evelyn!"
"I wasn’t!" Yvonne shrieked.
"What’s in your hand? A knife?"
"Liar!"
"You said you’d slit your wrists. No knife, no show."
Alexander’s voice cut through the line, icy and lethal. "I’ll handle this."
