Chapter 152
Evelyn's fingers turned white as she clenched the medical chart.
Countless times she wanted to tell Natalie to terminate the pregnancy, end the marriage, and start anew.
But seeing Natalie's tender gaze as she caressed her swollen belly silenced Evelyn's professional advice.
What gave her further pause—
Natalie had gotten pregnant right after college, never experiencing a single day in the workforce.
At least Evelyn had a respectable career to fall back on if her marriage collapsed.
"I envy your decisiveness, Evelyn." Natalie bit her lip. "But with this baby, I can't make clean breaks like you."
Evelyn silently flipped through the test results.
Should she advise?
Could she?
"Focus on your health first," she finally said. "For the baby's sake."
Tears welled in Natalie's eyes. "I will."
Outside the ward, pregnant patients eyed Evelyn with fear.
Olivia whispered, "After yesterday's scene, everyone's terrified of you."
Evelyn smirked. "When someone tries to destroy my career, not fighting back would be strange."
A shrill scream erupted around the corridor corner.
"Let me die! I can't face life anymore!"
Evelyn froze.
Annabelle's voice.
A wheelchair crashed to the floor. Mrs. Taylor's desperate plea followed: "Alexander, I'm begging you... If anything happens to Annabelle, I'll die too!"
Mr. Taylor's hunched figure rasped, "Take everything from our family, just save our daughter—"
Violent thrashing came from the room. Nurses clamored:
"Miss Taylor, don't! Mr. Hamilton is right outside!"
"He'll never want me now!" Annabelle shrieked hysterically. "Let me die!"
Olivia rolled her eyes. "Is this blackmail for Alexander or her parents?"
Evelyn turned on her heel.
"Dr. Carter!" Olivia jogged after her. "Not staying to watch?"
"Not interested."
Behind them, Mrs. Taylor's wail pierced the air: "Alexander, Annabelle is my whole life—"
