Chapter 396
"When will he arrive?"
"He's already on his way. Knowing you pulled an all-nighter, he insisted on relieving you."
Evelyn gave a slight nod, her fingers absently tracing the railing of the hospital bed.
Alexander checked his watch. "Mr. Taylor should be here soon."
As if on cue, Anthony Taylor pushed the door open.
Morning dew still clung to his suit jacket, evidence of his haste. Seeing his wife awake, his eyes instantly welled up. "You—how could you take such a risk? The child needs time to process everything. You nearly scared me to death..."
Teresa's freshly dried eyes grew moist again, though a relieved smile touched her lips.
Anthony set two thermal containers on the bedside table, retrieving one and handing it to Evelyn. "Last time we ate together, I noticed you liked tofu. So I made mapo tofu, crab roe tofu, and some stir-fried seasonal greens..."
Teresa's gaze remained fixed on her daughter.
"Let me." Alexander took the container. "I'll hold it for her."
When Evelyn stayed silent, Anthony could only offer Alexander a strained smile. "There's enough for both of you."
"Thank you, Mr. Taylor."
"Alexander, you two should go rest. And let your mother know not to worry."
Alexander nodded, gently grasping Evelyn's wrist. "We'll head out now."
Their footsteps echoed down the hallway.
Only after settling into the car did Evelyn speak. "Where to?"
"Home."
"Which home?"
Alexander's grip on the steering wheel tightened slightly. "Where do you want to go?"
"...I don't know."
"If you're worried about your adoptive parents, we can wait." He started the engine. "Face them when you're ready."
Evelyn leaned back against the seat, her lashes fluttering. "But where else is there for me in Hudson City?"
"What about the old house? My mother would be thrilled to see you."
"Annabelle might disagree."
Alexander abruptly turned the wheel.
The car arced sharply, speeding north.
"Where are we going?" Evelyn opened her eyes.
"Cloud Terrace Resort."
Evelyn let out a cold laugh. "What, planning to relive old memories?"
