Chapter 394
Evelyn Carter gazed silently at Alexander Hamilton, waiting for him to continue.
He deliberately avoided the subject. "Let's visit Aunt Teresa first. What paperwork is needed for the room transfer? I'll handle it."
She took a deep breath, her eyes still fixed on him.
"What's wrong?" He tilted his head slightly.
Evelyn finally gave up pressing him. "The nurses will handle the paperwork."
"Alright." He bent to fold the cot. "Does this need returning to the OB-GYN Department?"
"Yes."
Carrying the folded cot effortlessly with one hand, he strode toward the elevator. His ease contrasted sharply with how she'd struggled to drag it earlier.
The ICU buzzed with activity.
Nurses were removing monitoring equipment from Teresa Taylor. As they wheeled her out, Teresa suddenly grabbed Evelyn's hand, lips trembling but unable to speak, tears streaming down her face.
"Aunt Teresa, let go. We're moving to your room now," Evelyn said gently.
Teresa only tightened her grip, eyes pleading.
"I'll go with you," Evelyn relented.
The VIP Ward was spacious and bright—clearly Alexander's doing. Evelyn tried to withdraw her hand. "Let me get a chair."
Teresa immediately clutched her again, panic flashing across her face.
"Dr. Carter, the handover is complete," a nurse informed her. "Xiao Wang will handle her care from now on."
"Thank you."
Once alone, silence settled over the room.
Evelyn looked at the woman in the bed. "I've been the Andersons' daughter for over twenty years. I can't change how I address you overnight."
Teresa shook her head desperately, tears falling faster.
"I know what happened back then wasn't your fault. I've had a good life." Evelyn kept her tone even. "But you raised Annabelle for nearly thirty years. That bond runs deep. To her, we can never be sisters."
She paused.
"We can't even be ordinary friends."
