Chapter 362

"Still talking?"

Alexander's voice suddenly came from behind, startling Evelyn so badly she nearly dropped her phone.

"Something wrong?"

"No." He shoved his hands into his white coat pockets. "You were gone too long. I came to check."

Evelyn tucked her phone closer to her chest. "I'm at my own hospital. It's not like I'll get lost."

His gaze flickered toward her screen. "Vivian?"

"What, you need her? Want to talk to her?"

He shook his head. "No, go ahead."

Vivian's voice suddenly spiked through the speaker. "Alexander's there? You're together now?"

Evelyn cleared her throat. "I'm at work. He's here as a patient."

"He's visiting OB-GYN?" Vivian laughed mischievously. "Since when did he grow a uterus? This is groundbreaking. Report it to the UN—might win a Nobel Prize."

Evelyn couldn't help but chuckle. "Stop it."

"Seriously, I'm flying over next week to see you. Want anything? I'll mail it first."

"Dr. Wilson said there's an Asian supermarket here. Should be fine."

"Need me to send anything back? I'm in the country now—can run errands for you."

Evelyn thought for a moment. "Get some supplements for my parents and Emily. Deliver them directly."

"No problem. Oh, hand the phone to Alexander."

Evelyn frowned. "What do you want with him?"

"Private matter."

Skeptical, she passed the phone over.

Alexander had been staring out the window, lost in thought. The sudden intrusion made him blink. "What?"

"Vivian says she needs to ask you something."

"The Dempsey family?"

"Maybe."

He took the phone with a single "Hello" before falling silent.

Evelyn strained to listen but only caught Vivian's rapid chatter.

Then Alexander's expression shifted strangely. He glanced at Evelyn, rubbed his nose, and quickly stepped around the corner. "Why are you asking this?"

Watching his retreating back, her stomach dropped.

Did Simon's mess involve the Dempseys?

Why couldn't she know?

A terrible thought flashed—could that day in the cabin have...?

Her fingers clenched the hem of her white coat.

But she dismissed it immediately. Though bound, her clothes had been intact, her body undisturbed. As a doctor, she'd know if anything had happened.

Alexander returned swiftly, his ears faintly pink as he handed back the phone.

"The Dempseys are fine?" Evelyn cut straight to it.

"Yeah." He cleared his throat. "Just a bribed maid. She's already detained. As long as you don't press charges, they're clear."

She exhaled in relief. "Good."

"Do you want to press charges?"
