Chapter 691

Lydia Laurent's smile faltered as Alexander Hamilton repeatedly ignored her. She forced a weak grin. "Alexander, we'll take our leave now. We'll visit again tomorrow."

A flicker of irritation crossed Alexander's eyes. He'd prefer never seeing these people again, but remembering tomorrow's plans, he gave a curt nod. "Hmm."

The crowd finally dispersed, restoring peace to the rural clinic.

The post-rain night sky sparkled with clarity, moonlight painting silver patterns across the ground. Evelyn Carter gazed at the waxing moon. "A month already," she murmured.

The moon had looked identical when she first arrived—alone. Now Alexander stood beside her, an unexpected companion.

He read her thoughts. "If I'm bothering you, I can move to the examination room. But Dr. Carter, at least assign me a proper bed?" He emphasized "Dr. Carter" deliberately.

Evelyn averted her eyes. "Only one bed's available—the postpartum patient just discharged. If you don't mind—"

"I mind." Alexander cut in sharply. "Save it for someone who needs it more."

She sighed. "Just teasing. There's a foldable cot in the on-call room. It'll do for a few days."

Relieved, Alexander stood. "I'll fetch my things from the car."

"I'm coming too." Evelyn followed. "Some are mine." Her pointed tone declared she wanted no favors.

Alexander paused mid-step. "That determined to draw lines between us?"

"Not lines—boundaries." Her voice remained steady. "Habits are dangerous things."

She knew their power too well. Had she not grown accustomed to her marriage, the divorce wouldn't have shattered her so completely.

Alexander's gaze darkened. "I promised your father I'd look after you both. This is a vow, not charity."

His eyes held cautious hope as they searched hers.

Evelyn looked away. "After how you treated the Laurents today... What about Margaret—"

"Mother never approved of that match." His tone lightened. "Her instincts are impeccable."

"She noticed Lydia's flaws?"

"No." His intense stare burned through her. "She prefers you."

Moonlight amplified the heat in his eyes until it became unbearable.

Evelyn turned toward the door. "I'm checking on Elder Thompson."

"Together." Alexander matched her stride. "We can deliver some duck eggs."

At the Thompson residence, the courtyard gate was shut. Alexander peered over. "Lights are on."

His knock elicited a wary "Who's there?"

"Alexander Hamilton. With Dr. Carter."

The door creaked open, revealing Mrs. Thompson's delighted face. "Dr. Carter! Weren't you in town today?"
