Chapter 255
"Ask me anything. We're going to spend our lives together—I won't hide anything from you."
"What are your plans for the future?"
Peter Harrison's fingers tightened slightly on the steering wheel, his gaze flickering. "What kind of plans? I'm not sure what you mean."
Evelyn Carter chuckled. "Career plans. You can't stay an ordinary employee at the design institute forever, right?"
"Oh, that." Peter's tense shoulders visibly relaxed.
"What else did you think I meant?"
"Nothing." He cleared his throat. "My plan is to focus on the current project first. Mr. Harrison values me—he'll introduce me to bigger clients later. If the opportunity arises, I'd like to move to a more prestigious firm."
"Like Hamilton Group?"
"Of course. It's the industry benchmark—who wouldn’t want to work there?"
"Do you?"
Peter's Adam's apple bobbed. "Evelyn, why are you suddenly asking this?"
"Since the house deal fell through, we need to plan ahead." She looked out the window. "Marriage, buying a home, raising kids—none of that comes cheap."
"You're right." He nodded. "I'll work harder, aim for success sooner."
"I could actually put in a word with Alexander Hamilton—get you into Hamilton Group."
Peter slammed the brakes before quickly easing off. "No! We're divorced now. No need to owe him favors."
Evelyn smiled faintly. "True. It wouldn’t look good for you to rely on your ex-wife’s connections."
"Exactly. You’ve thought this through." He forced a laugh.
"Besides work, any other plans?"
"Not for now."
"Never thought about striking it rich overnight? No more work, straight into high society?"
Peter’s expression shifted. "Don’t joke. Even lottery winnings wouldn’t buy a decent place in H City."
"Right. People like us are destined to grind forever."
"Not necessarily." He gave her a meaningful look. "When you married Alexander, you could’ve been a carefree socialite."
"And you? If you suddenly got rich, would you still work?"
Peter burst into laughter. "Overnight fortune? Evelyn, got any leads? Teach me?"
