Chapter 179

Evelyn turned around, a faint smile playing on her lips. "What do you think?"

Peter Harrison gazed into her eyes and slowly shook his head. "I understand now."

"Understand what?"

His voice softened. "I suddenly feel much better."

Evelyn averted her gaze, silent.

Peter's tone was gentle as water. "You don't like me, but you don't love your ex-husband either. After the divorce, you seemed completely unaffected. If it were Emily... she'd probably cry the sky down."

"What does that have to do with you feeling better?"

Peter chuckled low. "Turns out, I'm not so inferior to those wealthy heirs after all."

"Does your leg still hurt?"

"It's much better. The ice pack helped. You really are a doctor."

When they got out of the car, Evelyn deliberately walked ahead.

There was a suitcase in the trunk—likely Peter's, filled with spare clothes.

She waited, and sure enough, Peter soon appeared wearing loose athletic shorts.

Evelyn knelt to examine his leg. "Still a bit swollen. It'll go down in a few days. Keep it dry to avoid infection."

Peter murmured in agreement. "Getting a free consultation from Dr. Carter. Thanks for going easy on me."

She stood up, smiling faintly. "You wouldn’t even book an appointment with me at the hospital. I’m in OB-GYN."

Perhaps it was their childhood friendship, but after just a few words, the awkwardness between them faded.

"Evelyn."

"Hmm?"

"That video at the hospital entrance... I saw it."

Her lashes flickered, but her expression remained calm. "I heard it went viral."

"Very viral. Though most of the attention was on Mr. Hamilton getting cheated on. People praised you for being quick-witted and brave."

Evelyn gave a quiet "Mm."

"By the way, do you know Mr. Hamilton? Back at the restaurant, the way he looked at you... I was afraid he’d retaliate."

She raised a brow. "Retaliate against me?"

"You exposed his fiancée’s scandal in public and humiliated him. If he wanted revenge, ordinary people like us wouldn’t stand a chance."

Evelyn said softly, "His fiancée was the one in the wrong, not me. If she hadn’t provoked me first, I wouldn’t have exposed her."

"True. The Hamiltons are too powerful for petty grudges. Besides, you’re divorced now. No reason to hunt down an ex-wife."

Just then, Emily came rushing over, clutching a man’s jacket and a half-empty water bottle.

Evelyn sighed. "Do you know how late it is? Mom and Dad are worried sick."

Emily stuck out her tongue. "The basketball game was too exciting. I lost track of time."

"You..."

"Please, sis? Cover for me this once!"

Peter tapped her forehead. "Your sister and I will lie for you this time. But if it happens again, you’re on your own."
