Chapter 737
Morning sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows into the dining room.
Aunt Wu had prepared an elaborate breakfast, with utensils and cups arranged separately. Due to Alexander's right hand burns, his cutlery was placed on the left while his cup remained on the right.
Still half-asleep, Evelyn instinctively reached for the milk glass on her right and took a sip.
A second later, realization struck like lightning.
She'd just used Alexander's cup!
Her fingers crept toward the glass to swap it back, only to brush against the bandaged back of Alexander's hand. Both recoiled as if electrocuted.
Alexander had clearly noticed the blunder too. He moved to discreetly exchange the cups before she noticed.
Their movements synchronized perfectly.
"Oh, what's the big deal about using the wrong glass?" Margaret Hamilton and Grace Anderson chuckled from across the table. "With so many cups here, just switch them."
Evelyn awkwardly rubbed her nose.
She did have germaphobic tendencies, but openly rejecting her ex-husband's used glass in front of her former mother-in-law seemed inappropriate.
"Right, we'll just switch."
Alexander pushed his fresh glass toward her and kept using the one she'd sipped from.
Evelyn decided to pretend nothing happened and focused on her breakfast.
Today was Alexander's follow-up appointment. Dressed casually and leaning on a cane, he prepared to leave.
"Take the wheelchair instead," Evelyn intercepted him. "You'll be standing for hours at the hospital."
Alexander smirked. "Doctor Carter enforcing protocol?"
Her gaze dropped to his legs. Beyond the leg injury, his body bore multiple burns and abrasions.
All injuries sustained for her sake.
"Are you rushing back to the office?" she hesitated. "If you need to—"
"No hurry." He cut her off. "I want to experience what ordinary couples do when visiting doctors together."
Central Hospital held profound significance for Evelyn. Pushing Alexander through familiar corridors, she even forgot to look for Olivia.
"Bone healing looks excellent," the doctor said after reviewing the scans. "Just avoid strenuous activity."
The real concern was the burns. The wounds looked gruesome during dressing changes, but Evelyn, accustomed to all manner of injuries, remained unfazed.
Alexander shifted uncomfortably.
"Did we pay the bill?" he suddenly asked.
"During the scan," Evelyn replied, puzzled.
"My throat feels sore," he amended.
"Any other symptoms?"
"Just thirsty, probably."
Evelyn stood. "I'll get water."
"Hot water," Alexander added. "In a paper cup."
She studied him suspiciously. "Are you sure it's just your throat?"
"Positive." He nudged her along. "Say hello to Olivia for me. Her medication list last time was incredibly helpful."
Baffled, Evelyn left. The moment she disappeared, Alexander pivoted his wheelchair toward the administrative elevators.
In the OB-GYN office, Olivia had just finished rounds.
"Doctor Carter!" She brightened upon seeing Evelyn. "You're back!"
Evelyn smiled. "Do you have paper cups? I need hot water."
Olivia handed her a cup, eyes sparkling. "Are you staying this time?"
"Not leaving for now," Evelyn said softly. "Even if I do... it won't be until next year."
