Chapter 345
Raindrops pattered sharply against the umbrella.
Evelyn walked briskly ahead, her high heels splashing through puddles.
Hurried footsteps approached from behind.
"Let me." Alexander Hamilton took the umbrella handle from her without waiting for permission, his fingers brushing against the back of her hand.
She jerked her hand away, brows furrowed.
"Nice landscaping in this neighborhood," he remarked, scanning the surroundings. "Security seems decent too."
Evelyn quickened her pace, rainwater soaking the hem of her dress.
The umbrella followed, shielding her completely.
She spun around abruptly.
Alexander arched an eyebrow. "What's wrong?"
[What exactly are you trying to do?]
The corner of his mouth lifted. "I thought my intentions were obvious."
[My refusal is equally obvious.]
"Give me a chance," he said, voice low. "No need to decide now, but at least let me make my stance clear."
Evelyn took a deep breath. [Just leave.]
"Leave where?"
[Anywhere.]
Before she could react, a warm hand gripped her waist.
Headlights sliced through the rain.
"Watch out!"
Alexander pulled her into his arms just as muddy water splashed across his back with a dull thud.
He released her with a grimace, tugging at his soaked suit jacket. "Seems the residents here have varying standards."
His drenched shirt clung to his back, outlining his muscular frame.
Evelyn reached for the umbrella.
"Don't touch the water," he sidestepped, keeping it away. "Your wound shouldn't get wet. Let's get you home."
"Evelyn?"
A flashlight beam cut through the darkness.
Gregory Wilson stood a short distance away, his gaze shifting between them. "Mr. Hamilton, you arrived quickly."
Alexander narrowed his eyes. "You live here?"
"Yes."
"What a coincidence."
Gregory chuckled. "Do you own property here, Mr. Hamilton?"
"No."
"Then it's not much of a coincidence."
"Evelyn lives in this neighborhood now," Alexander's tone darkened. "You knew that, didn't you?"
"I did."
"Arranged by Vivian Dempsey?"
"Originally," Gregory replied calmly. "But she's preoccupied with family matters now."
Alexander tightened his grip on Evelyn's shoulder. "We won't keep you, Dr. Wilson."
"No rush," Gregory stepped closer. "Evelyn is currently staying at my place."
The air turned frigid.
Alexander's fingers tensed. "You're living with him?"
Evelyn pressed her lips together.
The rain drummed louder against the umbrella.
"It's close to the hospital," Gregory said evenly. "The place was empty anyway. She can move out whenever she finds suitable housing."
