Chapter 547
Memories surged unexpectedly, moistening Evelyn Carter's eyes.
She recalled the newborns she'd delivered, murmuring, "Holding a newborn feels truly special."
Anthony Taylor said to his wife, "Terry always dreamed of becoming an OB-GYN. Now it seems fate guided her—born under such perilous circumstances, yet now she safeguards countless mothers and infants."
Baby Chloe immediately clung to Evelyn's sleeve, refusing to let Auntie Huang hold her.
The impending separation after returning to the hotel weighed heavily on Evelyn's heart.
The infant giggled innocently, oblivious to the coming farewell.
Evelyn gently booped the baby's nose, suddenly imagining becoming her godmother.
Chloe reached up with tiny hands to touch Evelyn's face.
Watching this scene, Anthony and Teresa Taylor felt warmth they hadn't experienced in years.
Alexander Hamilton returned from surgery with gauze covering his brow and bruises on his face.
Evelyn frowned at his injuries. "Why no stitches?"
"The doctor said this would suffice." Alexander addressed the elders, "Uncle, Auntie, I'm here to take them back."
Anthony asked concernedly, "Was the wound properly treated?"
"It's fine. Just needs time to heal." Alexander turned to Evelyn. "Let's go."
In the hallway, Evelyn finally insisted, "You need stitches."
His voice softened. "Really unnecessary."
"Do I look like a layperson? That wound requires at least three stitches."
"Then stitch it yourself?"
"I'm an OB-GYN."
"Don't you suture during C-sections?" Alexander raised an eyebrow.
Evelyn turned to leave. "Find your own ride back then."
He quickly caught her arm. "The surgeon said it'll heal like this."
"I don't believe that."
"Trust our surgical colleagues' expertise."
Evelyn stared him down. "Is this about vanity?"
Alexander rubbed his nose, deflecting. "Auntie Huang, how's the baby?"
Auntie Huang blinked. "She's perfectly fine."
"Denying treatment due to vanity!" Evelyn snapped.
Alexander sighed. "Haven't won you back yet. Scars aren't attractive."
"No one judges by appearance alone."
"True," he chuckled darkly. "You even considered someone like Peter Harrison."
At Peter's name, Evelyn tensed. "His mother will alert the police once she realizes he's missing. The surveillance footage—"
At the hospital entrance, Alexander helped Auntie Huang secure the stroller.
Noticing Evelyn lingering, he patted the passenger seat. "Get in."
"You haven't answered me."
"Used cosmetic sutures already." Alexander leaned back. "As for Peter—I told you, he's in Fiji."
Evelyn leaned closer, confirming the stitches.
"Why lie?"
"What do you think?" Alexander glanced at Auntie Huang in the backseat, lowering his voice. "Bianca Langley's waiting."
Once inside the car, Evelyn pressed, "Does Hamilton Group operate in Fiji?"
"That tiny country?" Alexander laughed dryly.
"Then Peter—"
"Ambitious men find opportunities anywhere." His gaze remained fixed ahead. "His fate's in his hands now."
Evelyn studied his expression for deception.
"Still worried I'm a killer?"
"Are you?"
Alexander inhaled sharply. "Not directly."
"Business related?"
"Initially."
Evelyn studied her hands. "Taking lives for profit? As a doctor, I can't comprehend that."
"That's how power operates." His voice turned gravelly. "Often it's self-preservation, not malice."
"I understand, but—"
"You shouldn't have to." Alexander cut in firmly. "With me here, you'll never face such choices."
"Alexander."
"Hmm?"
"Simon Stapleton... did he also go to Fiji?"
"He's definitely deceased."
Evelyn whipped her head around.
Auntie Huang gasped audibly from the backseat.
