Chapter 159

A white Cayenne stood out conspicuously on the small town's street.

Evelyn Carter glanced at it briefly before looking away.

"Should we call the police?" Peter Harrison whispered.

She shook her head. "They might just be passing by."

Peter exhaled in relief. "I was worried it might be that patient who harassed you last time."

"Unlikely," she said with a light laugh. "I get along well with my patients."

The conversation shifted to Emily Anderson. Peter stirred his coffee. "She wants to go to the capital with her boyfriend for college."

Evelyn considered this for a moment. "I'll talk to her soon."

"The boy seems decent," Peter added. "A sports scholarship student. Could become a teacher later."

"You approve?"

"Not exactly approval," he admitted with a wry smile. "I just admire his courage. If I had been that brave back then..."

His coffee cup was empty, leaving only bitterness on his tongue.

Ding—

The café door chimed.

"Welcome!" the waitress greeted cheerfully.

"One mocha, whole milk, half sugar."

Evelyn stood abruptly. "Time to go."

"Did you get a call?"

"No, but it's dinnertime." She grabbed her purse. "Even romance shouldn't interfere with meals."

She walked past the counter without a second glance.

Peter hurried to open the door for her.

"Thanks." She nodded.

The white Cayenne remained parked by the curb, drawing curious looks from passersby.

No one was inside.

"Taxis are scarce right now," Peter checked his phone. "Let me drive you."

The ride-hailing app showed over thirty people in queue.

A sudden bright smile crossed Evelyn's face. "Then I'll trouble you."

The warmth of her smile left Peter flustered.

"I—I'll get the car!" His ears reddened as he rushed toward the alley.

Her phone buzzed—Emily calling.

"Where are you guys?"

"Your boyfriend left already?"

"...Peter told you?" Emily's voice wavered.

"Bring him to meet me after your exams."

"Evelyn!" Emily nearly sobbed. "Don't be like Mom and Dad—"

"Just a talk," Evelyn cut in. "I need to see if he's reliable."

Instant excitement bubbled through the phone. "He treats me so well! Unlike how Alexander treated you—"

The words cut off abruptly.

Evelyn was about to press when a chill ran down her spine.

Someone was watching her.
