Chapter 532
The baby in the stroller suddenly started crying, forcing Evelyn to stop in her tracks.
Alexander's temple wound was still bleeding. He wiped it hastily with his hand. "Mr. Anderson, this isn't what you think—"
"Shut up!" Andrew Anderson yanked Evelyn behind him. "Who said you could call me uncle?"
Alexander staggered back from the shove, his back slamming hard against the wall.
Evelyn bent down to gently stroke the baby's cheek. "Hush now, Mommy will be back soon." The little one blinked tear-filled eyes and suddenly grasped her finger tightly.
"Let's go!" Andrew dragged Evelyn toward the elevator.
Alexander ignored his injury and sprinted after them. The elevator doors closed mercilessly in his face. He whirled around and bolted for the emergency stairs—
"Alex!" Lydia Laurent gasped, blocking his path.
Leonard Laurent looked stunned. "Mr. Hamilton, what's—"
"Get out of my way!" Alexander shook off Lydia's reaching hand.
She stubbornly pursued him. "You're bleeding! Let me see—"
Outside the hotel's revolving doors, Andrew turned back with a cold laugh. "Already found a replacement, huh?"
Alexander's eyes reddened with desperation. "Mr. Anderson, you've got it all wrong!"
Lydia flared up like a mother hen protecting her chicks. "How dare you hit someone? I'm calling the police!"
"Go ahead!" Andrew shoved Evelyn into a taxi. "Let this bastard bring the cops to find me!"
The car door slammed shut just as Lydia kept chattering: "Evelyn didn't even care about your injury...she clearly doesn't love you—"
"SHUT UP!" Alexander's roar made Lydia flinch violently.
......
In the taxi's backseat, Evelyn studied her father's stormy profile.
"Dad...how did you find me here?"
Andrew's knuckles cracked from how tightly he clenched his fists. "That Annabelle barged into Emily's hospital room yesterday. Said you abandoned your adoptive parents after climbing the social ladder. And that you—" His voice suddenly choked.
"What else did she say?"
"That you rekindled things with Alexander!" Andrew slammed his fist against the seat. "Your sister's surgical wounds tore open from rage! Your mother fainted from crying!"
Evelyn's nails dug into her palms.
"About the baby—"
"What baby? All lies!" Andrew suddenly lowered his voice. "Evelyn...tell me the truth. Did you already know about your real parents?"
In the rearview mirror, the hotel entrance grew increasingly distant. Alexander's figure shrank to a tiny black dot before vanishing around the corner.
