Chapter 358
A light drizzle drifted through London's streets.
Evelyn Carter stood by the hospital corridor window, watching raindrops trace winding paths down the glass.
Annabelle Taylor's shrill voice cut through the air behind her: "Don't even think about taking anything from me!"
Evelyn turned calmly, replying in Mandarin: "No one here understands you. Save your breath."
"Alexander will always be mine!" Annabelle's nails dug into her palms. "My parents too!"
A phone buzzed.
Annabelle startled like a frightened rabbit. "You're recording this?!"
Evelyn leisurely pulled out her phone, swiping the screen with one finger. "Oops. Seems I accidentally hit record."
Annabelle's face drained of color.
"Let's make a deal." Evelyn pocketed the device. "Make Alexander disappear from my life completely, and this recording never reaches him."
"You—"
"Including your parents," Evelyn added. "I'll cut all ties myself."
Suspicion flickered in Annabelle's eyes. "You'd really walk away?"
"With pleasure."
......
On her office desk, a phone screen lit up.
[Alexander Hamilton: Why aren't you responding?]
Evelyn smirked.
He'd actually saved her number.
[Busy.]
The instant she sent it, another message arrived: [What time do you finish? I'll pick you up.]
[No.]
The phone rang abruptly.
She declined the call.
[Next time you call, I block you.]
Silence reclaimed the world.
A blonde colleague approached. "Evelyn, that couple insists on transferring hospitals."
"Follow protocol." She didn't look up.
"I thought you'd take the case," the colleague mused. "Since they're your compatriots."
Evelyn closed the medical chart. "I'm still new here. Not experienced enough."
"Fair enough." He shrugged. "I'm Eric, by the way."
"Hello."
Eric lowered his voice. "Gregory says you're his girlfriend?"
"Gregory?"
"Gregory Wilson from Cambridge Med." He winked. "He specifically asked me to look out for you."
