Chapter 335
Vivian Dempsey leaned closer to the oil painting, her fingertip lightly brushing the canvas.
"This streetlamp..." She frowned in thought. "Why does it look so much like the one behind the medical school's lab building?"
Evelyn Carter's fingers tightened slightly.
She lowered her lashes, avoiding the smiling gaze of the girl in the painting.
"Am I remembering wrong?" Vivian scratched her head. "The last time I went to the medical school was three years ago."
Evelyn pressed her lips together and shook her head.
"Okay." Vivian shrugged. "Maybe all European-style streetlamps look the same."
Evelyn pointed at her phone.
"Oh, right!" Vivian smacked her forehead. "Your parents must be worried sick."
The moment the video call connected, three anxious faces filled the screen.
"Sis! You scared us to death!" Emily Anderson's eyes were red-rimmed.
Grace Anderson's voice trembled. "Evelyn, why did you suddenly go abroad?"
Evelyn's throat tightened.
"Don't worry, Auntie." Vivian turned the camera toward the window. "There's a critical patient here who insisted Evelyn perform the surgery."
Andrew Anderson studied his daughter's pale face. "Why aren't you speaking?"
"She just finished an eight-hour surgery." Vivian handed her a glass of water. "Her throat's gone hoarse."
Grace wrung her hands anxiously. "What about food? Does the hospital provide meals?"
Evelyn scribbled "dorm" on a notepad.
"The hospital values Evelyn so much!" Vivian gestured dramatically. "They gave us a two-bedroom apartment with a kitchen."
Andrew nudged his wife's shoulder proudly. "See? I told you our daughter would be in demand anywhere!"
"Then why don't you show Vivian your cooking skills?" Grace suddenly laughed. "Remember when she mistook sugar for salt and dumped half a jar in the pan during her first attempt?"
Evelyn's ears burned. She grabbed a pillow and threw it at the screen.
Vivian suddenly gasped. "Wait!"
She zoomed in on the video, pointing at the painting behind Evelyn. "Uncle, Auntie, look at this streetlamp..."
