Chapter 337

The doorbell rang while Evelyn Carter was packing her luggage.

She paused, wondering who could be visiting at this hour.

Peering through the peephole, she saw Gregory Wilson standing outside, drenched from head to toe.

Rainwater dripped steadily from his hair, forming a small puddle at his feet.

Evelyn quickly pulled the door open.

"May I come in?" His voice was hoarse.

She stepped aside, but Gregory didn’t enter immediately. Instead, he shook the water from his hair at the doorstep.

Evelyn hurried to the bathroom and grabbed a fresh towel.

"It’s new," she gestured, worried he might misunderstand.

Gregory shook his head. "No need. Do you have tissues?"

She turned to fetch a box of tissues and pointed to the sofa, inviting him to sit.

"I’m soaked. I’ll stand." He wiped his face carelessly with a tissue. "Your throat still hurts?"

Evelyn nodded.

"Did you take your medicine?"

Another nod.

Gregory glanced at the floor. "Sorry for making a mess again."

Evelyn waved her hand to say it was fine.

"You still haven’t bought a phone?" He suddenly handed her his own. "Use mine to type."

Before she could react, the phone was already in her hands.

"Passcode is 0326."

Her heartbeat quickened inexplicably as she entered the numbers.

When the screen unlocked, she secretly exhaled in relief.

It wasn’t her birthday, nor were there any traces of her in his phone.

The number 0326 held no meaning for her.

The wallpaper was just the default image of a blue sky with white clouds.

A man who had been in the country that morning now stood before her in the middle of the night, drenched from the English rain.

She wasn’t naive about what this meant.

Since her clear rejection last time, Gregory had never brought up the subject again.

But some things couldn’t be ignored just because they went unspoken.

[Why did you suddenly come to England? What about the hospital?]

Gregory leaned closer to read the screen. "I’ve worked in England before. The dean knows about this."

[When are you going back?]

He chuckled. "Am I making you uncomfortable?"

[No, I just don’t want to interfere with your work.]

"I have a place to stay. I was planning to visit properly tomorrow." He paused. "I just remembered this house has old wiring. Power outages happen during storms. I didn’t want you to be alone and scared."

Warmth bloomed in Evelyn’s chest. [Thank you.]

"For coming to see you?"

[For the house.]

When Vivian Dempsey mentioned knowing the landlord, Evelyn had been skeptical.

Especially after seeing the oil painting in the living room—her suspicions had only grown stronger.
