Chapter 68

"Evelyn, does it...hurt for the baby during a miscarriage?"

"It was only five weeks. Not even an embryo yet."

"What about you?"

Evelyn's fingers curled slightly.

"From the moment you left the resort until the procedure ended—eight full hours. Was that your last chance for me, or..."

"The wallet was an accident." Evelyn cut him off. "I heard everything you said on the terrace that day."

Alexander's Adam's apple bobbed.

"I should've known the moment Annabelle returned, the ending was already decided." Her voice was soft. "I just...didn’t want to see you two again."

His knuckles turned white.

"The hospital was quiet that day. Olivia prescribed the medication quickly." Evelyn gazed at the night outside the window. "But I sat in the exam room, staring at those two pills for a long time."

Four hours of hesitation.

Alexander suddenly raised a hand to cover his eyes.

A female officer stepped out with paperwork. "The bail process is complete."

He reached for it, but she bypassed him and handed it to Evelyn. "Regulations require it to go to family."

"Give it to him." Evelyn smiled faintly. "Next time, someone else might be here to bail him out."

"Alexander!"

Annabelle rushed in, her belly prominent, and clung to his arm. "I was so worried! Did they give you any trouble?"

He frowned. "I told you to rest at home."

"I was worried about you!" She pouted, shaking his arm. "I’ll forgive you this time, but if it happens again, I’m taking the baby back to England!"

His eyes followed the figure by the wall.

Evelyn leaned against it, then suddenly swayed.

"Careful!"

He shoved Annabelle aside and lunged forward—only for Evelyn to step away. "Don’t."

"Where’s Vivian? I asked her to—"

"Alexander!" Annabelle yanked his sleeve. "My stomach hurts..."

The officer smirked. "So this is the real Mrs. Hamilton?"

Annabelle’s expression darkened. "What nonsense did she tell you? Playing the victim—"

"She came to post bail for Mr. Hamilton." The officer slapped the paperwork onto the desk.

Annabelle shrieked, "I could’ve bailed him! Why involve her?"
