Chapter 354
Evelyn stared at her phone screen, fingers hovering above the keyboard.
Alexander leaned back in his chair, watching her trembling fingertips.
"About Simon... You really don't want to know?"
Her fingers struck the screen forcefully: [The police can't find him. You think you can?]
"H City isn't that big."
[So?]
Alexander suddenly leaned forward, his shadow engulfing her. "Are you worried I'll break the law? Or worried about him?"
Evelyn jerked her head up, meeting his fathomless gaze.
She typed rapidly: [Uncle Dempsey contacted me.]
"Heh." Alexander straightened, loosening his tie. "The Dempseys afraid of trouble?"
[Simon took me from their house.]
"So you'd rather let him go?" His voice turned icy. "He nearly destroyed your voice."
Her fingers paused for a second: [The law will punish him.]
"The law?" Alexander sneered. "Where was the law when he committed marriage fraud? When he kidnapped you?"
Evelyn clenched her phone.
Alexander suddenly gripped her chin. "Evelyn, when will you start thinking about yourself?"
She wrenched free. The phone clattered to the floor.
He picked it up. The unsent message glowed on screen: [I'm no saint, but I won't become someone like you.]
His pupils constricted.
"Someone like me?" Each word was a dagger. "Is that how you see me?"
Harsh corridor lights carved shadows across his profile.
Evelyn reached for her phone. He held it just out of reach.
"Loving you is wrong. Caring for you is wrong. Now even my breath is wrong." His voice cracked. "Evelyn, have you ever truly moved on?"
Her hand froze mid-air.
Alexander stepped closer, his breath hot against her ear: "That child—"
Evelyn recoiled, her back hitting the wall.
He shoved the phone into her hand. New text appeared: [If I'd known about the baby, I'd never have chosen Annabelle.]
Her fingers shook as she read it.
[Easy to say now.]
Alexander seized her wrist. "Then tell me—what should I have done?"
She yanked free. The screen vibrated with her furious typing: [STAY AWAY FROM ME!]
His eyes turned glacial.
"Fine. Perfect." He took two steps back, lips twisting into a mirthless smile. "So in your eyes, I'm not even worthy of redemption."
Footsteps echoed down the hall.
Evelyn turned to leave—then glass shattered behind her.
Alexander had punched through the fire alarm casing. Blood dripped between his fingers.
