Chapter 912

This escape plan was executed flawlessly.

The reporters staking out nearby remained completely unaware, still believing the driver Henry had left in the car.

According to their intel, Henry drove out punctually every noon, seemingly running errands for Alexander.

Evelyn gazed at the scenery whizzing past the window and sighed softly. "Our peaceful days are over."

A faint smile tugged at Alexander's lips.

These years had never felt light—only by Evelyn's side could he find fleeting tranquility. Hearing her words, an unexpected satisfaction welled up inside him.

Perhaps his care during this period hadn't been entirely inadequate.

As the car entered the campus, Evelyn nearly pushed the door open to jump out. Alexander swiftly grabbed her wrist. "Easy. She's definitely still in the dorm. I've had people watching."

He omitted the surveillance detail, wary of her disapproval.

This vocational college on the outskirts of the university district had shockingly lax security. Alexander expected to be stopped, yet they strolled unchallenged into the female dormitory area.

Glancing down at his attire, he briefly questioned his appearance—had he been mistaken for a delivery guy?

Only upon spotting the waiting bodyguard did he relax. Even the suit-clad security hadn't been stopped—clearly a campus management issue.

Evelyn frowned at the unsecured dormitory building. Memories surfaced: the mountain clinic, the helpless mothers in hospital wards. She exhaled slowly.

Urban suffering often hid in deeper shadows.

Alexander watched her trembling lashes, pretending not to discern her thoughts as he turned to confirm with the bodyguard. "You're certain it's her?"

"Lily Flores, freshman in Business English." The bodyguard lowered his voice. "She's skipped classes for a week. Fortunately, attendance isn't strict here."

The name sent a pang through Evelyn's heart. No wonder she'd given a false name at the hospital—"Flores" carried the blood and tears of countless girls.

Alexander gave a slight nod. "Good work."

The bodyguard understood, bowing respectfully to Evelyn before leaving. "Goodbye, Mrs. Hamilton."

The title made Evelyn's mouth twitch. Once the bodyguard departed, she murmured while climbing the stairs, "Can they use a different form of address?"

A shadow flickered through Alexander's eyes, yet he agreed readily. "Of course."

During their three-year marriage, this title had once unsettled Evelyn for ages. Had he not destroyed everything himself, they wouldn't need to start over.

Preoccupied with thoughts of Lily and the newborn urgently needing signatures, Evelyn missed his shift in mood. One hand cradled her abdomen, the other gripped the railing as they ascended slowly.

The dormitory stood silent at midday on a weekday.

Evelyn paused before the target door and knocked gently. Alexander stepped aside wordlessly.

A weak voice answered from within. "Forgot your key?"

Lily's pale face appeared in the crack. Recognizing Evelyn, she recoiled in panic, nearly slamming the door shut.

"Your baby had a high fever last night," Evelyn said softly.

The door froze mid-swing.

Lily's fingers dug into the wood before finally going slack. "I'm sorry, Dr. Carter..."

"The child needs a guardian's signature." Evelyn kept her tone gentle. "You also need a follow-up exam."

Footsteps echoed in the hallway. Alexander suddenly seized Evelyn's wrist. "Let's talk elsewhere."

His gaze remained fixed on the door crack, wary of Lily lashing out.

Spotting the man, Lily shrank back in fear. The door slammed shut—Evelyn's hand still on the frame.

Alexander's knuckles struck the doorjamb with a dull thud.

"Are your bones alright?" Evelyn immediately inspected his reddening hand.

He shook his head, turning to the trembling girl. "The hospital hasn't called the police yet. There's still time. Even if you don't want this child, at least complete the paperwork."

His calm tone shattered Lily completely. The girl collapsed to the floor, sobbing uncontrollably as her confession poured out.
