Chapter 260

Evelyn sighed softly. "Natalie didn’t want you to see her like this. I promised to keep it from you."

The director's eyes instantly reddened. "Do you think my pain could compare to what my daughter has endured?" Her hands trembled as she covered her face. "I never should have let her marry Simon Stapleton..."

Gregory handed her a tissue. "Right now, Natalie’s health is what matters most. The pregnancy has been terminated. As long as she stays away from the Stapletons, she’ll recover in time."

"Thank you both." The director wiped her tears and pulled a document from her drawer. "Evelyn, I’ve been thinking. With your skills, you’ve reached the ceiling at our hospital. I’ve secured an overseas placement—submit your application before the month ends."

She turned to Gregory. "I know your family situation, but if you want to go abroad with Evelyn, I’ll support you fully."

Gregory’s gaze lingered on Evelyn. "My work is the same everywhere—healing people."

In the hallway, Gregory suddenly spoke. "Have you decided?"

Evelyn paused. "About what?"

"The overseas opportunity."

"I..." She bit her lip. "My parents are getting older, and my sister just started college..."

"I can help arrange care," Gregory said quickly. "A nurse or housekeeper—my family has connections in H City."

Evelyn smiled faintly. "Dr. Wilson, favors are the hardest debts to repay."

"That’s not what I meant—"

"I’ll check on Natalie." She hurried toward the ward.

Inside the room, Vivian was handing Natalie a peeled banana. "Evelyn says these help with potassium. Eat up."

"Thanks, Vivian."

Spotting Evelyn, Vivian grinned. "Did the director give you a bonus?"

"Better than that." Evelyn pulled up a chair. "Name your craving—my treat."

"Time to go all out!" Vivian lowered her voice. "Oh, your phone rang a few times earlier."

Evelyn checked her screen. Missed calls from her sister, Emily. Then a text made her breath catch:

[Sis, Auntie Lucy brought over a whole case of cognac and tonics. Mom and Dad accepted everything! Does this mean they’re proposing?]
