Chapter 944
Alexander Hamilton observed Evelyn Carter's reaction discreetly. Seeing her expression remain unchanged, he continued, "Elder Wilson has been wanting to meet Baby Chloe ever since he heard about her."
Evelyn frowned slightly. "There shouldn't be any connection between Elder Wilson and the baby. Is this because of the Langleys?"
At the baby's birthday party, the Wilson family had sent representatives, but Elder Wilson himself hadn't attended. Evelyn couldn't understand why this respected patriarch would take such an interest in a little girl.
"Perhaps he's eager for grandchildren," Alexander said calmly. "Both Gregory and Vincent are still single. It's natural for him to be anxious."
Compared to the Hamilton family's sparse lineage, the Wilsons had more descendants. But with the Hamiltons expecting new additions soon, Elder Wilson couldn't help feeling impatient.
Evelyn nodded. "Then I'll go with you. It wouldn't be convenient for you to take care of the baby in your condition." She wasn't distrustful of Alexander, but he had just been discharged from the hospital and still looked pale. If he became exhausted at the party and frightened the baby, it would be troublesome.
The thought of Gregory Wilson never crossed her mind. that chapter of her life was long closed and not worth revisiting.
But Alexander was calculating something else entirely. His original plan had been to make Gregory give up any lingering hopes. If Evelyn went along, wouldn't that give them a chance to meet?
What if Gregory persisted and Evelyn softened?
Visions of melodramatic scenarios flashed through his mind, making him increasingly uneasy. His expression visibly darkened.
"You look even paler now," Evelyn noticed immediately.
Alexander forced composure. "You're four months pregnant. Would attending a banquet be too taxing?"
His gaze dropped to her noticeably rounded abdomen—larger than average, as if she were carrying twins.
"I'll just sit and rest," Evelyn said with a light laugh. "All those daily walks have to count for something."
She needed to maintain moderate activity, especially with two little ones growing inside her.
Unable to find a better excuse, Alexander reluctantly agreed.
On the day of Elder Wilson's birthday celebration, the couple arrived dressed elegantly yet comfortably. Alexander had regained some color, but traces of fatigue lingered between his brows, adding a touch of sternness to his demeanor.
Evelyn wore a flowing dress with her hair elegantly pinned up, exuding gentle grace. Holding Baby Chloe's tiny hand, they entered the banquet hall and instantly became the center of attention.
The Wilsons welcomed them warmly. Though everyone tacitly understood Evelyn's status, since she and Alexander hadn't remarried, they politely addressed her as "Miss Carter."
"I heard you work at Central Hospital?" Elder Wilson asked kindly. "My eldest son is also there. You must know him?"
Evelyn responded politely, "I've collaborated with Dr. Wilson on several surgeries. He's highly skilled and well-respected in the hospital."
The elder waved a hand. "He's nowhere near as accomplished as you young people."
Seeing the conversation shift to Gregory, Alexander quickly interjected, "Uncle Wilson, I heard you've been arranging matches for Gregory recently?"
Evelyn shot him a surprised look. Had he suffered brain damage from blood loss?
Mentioning his son's marital prospects made Elder Wilson sigh. "Neither of my boys gives me peace of mind!"
Alexander understood immediately. "So the matchmaking hasn't gone well?"
Evelyn was secretly astonished. With Gregory's qualifications, how could he possibly fail at matchmaking?
"Don't even ask," the elder lamented. "Either Vincent ruins things, or the women find Gregory too aloof. You young people understand each other better—perhaps you could introduce him to someone?"
"No problem," Alexander agreed readily. "I'll have my secretary make arrangements."
Evelyn's eyes widened in shock. Since when had he become so enthusiastic about playing Cupid?
