Chapter 889

Alexander Hamilton's promise sounded sincere, but Evelyn Carter had witnessed too many broken vows in the hospital.

He took a deep breath and suddenly grasped her hand. "I'll prove it with actions."

Evelyn's stomach churned violently, leaving her too weak to speak.

In the dining room, their mothers were chatting warmly. Margaret Hamilton hinted, "Young people should go on more dates."

Grace Anderson agreed, "Take more walks before the baby bump shows."

Evelyn forced herself to sit. "Let's eat first."

The mothers immediately sprang into action, piling her bowl high with food in seconds.

The multigrain rice smelled earthy and comforting, but Evelyn's throat tightened at the sight of the lavish spread.

"Lemon water helps with morning sickness," Alexander suddenly stood up.

He returned with a cup of warm honey-lemon water, perfectly balanced between sweet and tart.

Evelyn took a small sip, her brow finally relaxing.

Margaret wondered silently: If he's this attentive, why hasn't he proposed yet?

Throughout the meal, Alexander performed like a professional nanny—removing fish bones, skimming grease, feeding the baby, and finally eating the cold leftovers.

Grace watched, her stance softening gradually.

While clearing the dishes, she noticed Evelyn hadn't touched her favorite fruits.

"Are you feeling unwell?" Grace knocked on the bedroom door.

Evelyn assumed it was Alexander. "Come in."

A mother's warm hand pressed against her forehead.

"Mom?" Evelyn's nose tingled with emotion.

Grace studied her daughter with concern. "Tell me what you'd like to eat."

The soft lamplight eased Evelyn's pallor. "Just grapes and blueberries."

"That's good..." Grace still looked troubled.

Evelyn linked arms with her. "I performed a major surgery today. Even the department head insisted I take time off."

Grace sighed. "I support your career, but I wish you could be more selfish sometimes."
