Chapter 789
The afternoon sun lazily spilled across the courtyard of the Hamilton ancestral home.
Margaret Hamilton and Grace Anderson stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the black sedan slowly exit the gates. Their eyes were already rimmed red, but they stubbornly refused to let the tears fall.
Evelyn Carter sat in the backseat, cradling the baby tightly against her chest. The little one seemed to sense the somber mood, reaching out with chubby fingers to touch Evelyn's face.
"Don't be afraid, Auntie's here," Evelyn murmured soothingly, though her voice trembled slightly.
Alexander Hamilton glanced at them through the rearview mirror, his knuckles whitening around the steering wheel.
Their meeting place with Bianca Langley was a discreet café. When they pushed open the door, Bianca was already waiting, two steaming cups of coffee on the table.
"Let me hold her," Bianca extended her arms, her eyes glinting with complex emotions.
Alexander carefully passed the baby over, his fingertips trembling slightly during the transfer. He leaned down to press a gentle kiss to the baby's forehead, handling her as if she were the most fragile treasure.
Evelyn stood to the side, her nails digging into her palms. She didn't dare hold the baby again, afraid she wouldn't be able to control her emotions.
"Ah!" The baby suddenly stretched her tiny hands toward Evelyn, her big dark eyes filled with expectation.
A faint smile touched Bianca's striking features. "Seems she prefers you."
Evelyn could no longer hold back. She took the baby and buried her face in the soft tufts of hair. The familiar milky scent made her eyes sting.
"It's almost time," Alexander checked his watch, his voice hoarse.
Just then, his phone vibrated abruptly. The number flashing on the screen froze his expression instantly.
"Mr. Hamilton, suspicious individuals have been spotted loitering near the residential area. Should we intercept?"
Alexander narrowed his eyes. "Proceed as planned."
After hanging up, he quickly explained the situation to Bianca. The latter let out a cold laugh, pulling the baby closer.
"Vincent Croix really is relentless," Bianca's red lips curled in scorn. "Too bad I won't give him another chance this time."
The three split up swiftly in the parking lot. Bianca carried the baby into an inconspicuous sedan, while Evelyn and Alexander pushed the empty stroller toward their original vehicle.
The moment their car left the neighborhood, a black Mercedes appeared in the rearview mirror, tailing them closely.
"Just as expected," Alexander smirked, deliberately slowing down to let the pursuer keep up.
Evelyn tightened her grip on the seatbelt. "Are you sure about this?"
"Sympathy for men brings misfortune," Alexander stared straight ahead, his tone icy. "He brought this upon himself."
The two cars sped down a deserted ring road, one after the other. Suddenly, the Mercedes accelerated, cutting them off with a screeching halt in the middle of the road.
Vincent Croix stumbled out, his suit and tie askew. He pounded frantically on their window. "Bianca! Get out here!"
Alexander rolled down the window and punched him square in the face.
"Where is she?" Vincent staggered back, his gaze sweeping over the empty stroller. His face drained of color. "You tricked me?"
He whirled around to run back, but Alexander executed a sharp reverse, blocking his path. The collision sent a piercing screech through the air.
Evelyn calmly dialed emergency services. "Hello, there's been a traffic accident..."
"You!" Vincent trembled with rage, his pointing finger shaking. "Do you have any idea what you've done?"
Alexander leisurely adjusted his cuffs. "Mr. Croix, hit-and-run cases make headlines. You... wouldn't want to be in the news again so soon, would you?"
The sunlight illuminated Vincent's contorted face, revealing the madness and despair in his eyes. In the distance, a silver airplane ascended slowly into the blue sky.
