Chapter 770

Vivian Dempsey was as blunt as ever.

Others might be fooled by Alexander Hamilton's facade, but as Evelyn Carter's best friend, she saw right through his tactics—he was clearly exploiting Evelyn's loyal nature to win her back.

A former master of romance indeed. His psychological warfare was flawless.

Alexander admitted frankly, "Miss Dempsey, Evelyn has been under a lot of work stress lately. You should take her out more often."

He wasn't hiding his intentions. Since he was calling to confirm Evelyn's whereabouts, he might as well be direct.

"Hah," Vivian rolled her eyes on the other end of the line. "Did you upset Evelyn again?"

Alexander's sharp hearing picked up the background noise—Vivian was working overtime at her office. So she wasn't the one meeting Evelyn tonight.

He made up an excuse to hang up and immediately contacted his informants at Central Hospital.

For months, he'd been driving Evelyn to and from work without fail, showering her with sweet gestures. The entire OB-GYN department assumed they were a couple. Even colleagues who knew about their past marriage thought they were reconciling.

That was how Alexander had obtained the contact details of several nurses—originally just to track Evelyn's schedule. But tonight was different. He sensed danger.

His first suspicion fell on Gregory Wilson, but the intel he gathered made him bolt upright from the couch.

Evelyn wasn't just meeting someone—she was on a blind date!

Rumor had it the guy was a colleague introduced by a patient—young, accomplished, and most importantly, never married!

Alexander didn't bother verifying the details. He grabbed Baby Chloe and rushed out the door, heading straight for Evelyn's favorite cafés and teahouses, especially those near the hospital.

When he sped into the teahouse across from the hospital, he spotted Evelyn immediately.

They'd visited this place before with her father. But today, instead of a private room, she was seated at a semi-private booth on the first floor, across from a sharply dressed young man. Their animated conversation stung Alexander's eyes.

Silently, he booked the booth behind Evelyn and settled in with the stroller. The waiter gave him a curious look—a man with a baby in a teahouse was unusual—but assumed he was waiting for someone and didn't pry.

It was Baby Chloe's first time in a teahouse, and she was excitedly looking around. Alexander pressed a finger to his lips, and miraculously, the little one quieted down.

Father and daughter began their covert observation.

Using his phone screen as a mirror, Alexander studied the so-called suitor. Objectively, the man was average-looking but had an earnest demeanor—exactly the type that thrived in the dating scene.

The thought that he himself had met Evelyn through a blind date sent his alarm bells ringing. He could practically hear his inner voice roaring: So what if he's a few years younger?!

Love makes fools of the wise. His thoughts spiraled into absurdity.

Liam Macmillan suddenly shivered and instinctively tightened his jacket.

Evelyn was focused on the test reports he'd brought. Noticing his discomfort, she asked, "Cold? Have some hot tea."

They'd been discussing surgical staplers since sitting down and hadn't even touched their drinks. Liam poured himself a cup to warm up, puzzled. "The windows are closed. Why is it suddenly so chilly?"

He joked, "Last time I felt like this was in high school when I fell asleep in class and got caught by the dean."

Evelyn closed the report and asked, "What happened then?"

"Got sent to stand at the back of the classroom," Liam laughed. "Ended up sleeping even more soundly against the door."

Behind the screen, Alexander nearly crushed his teacup. Unable to see the medical equipment on the table, all he heard was their lively banter—deepening his misunderstanding by the second.

Once Liam confirmed Evelyn had no plans to remarry, he shifted focus to work. "Dr. Carter, what do you think of this stapler?"

It was a new device designed for C-sections, and he was eager for the seasoned obstetrician's approval.

Evelyn pondered. "Personally, I think it's good. But something this important needs to be discussed with the team."

She meant the department heads, but to Alexander, it sounded like she was referring to "family."
