Chapter 761
Gregory Wilson's expression remained composed when he saw Evelyn Carter.
He had always known her medical expertise would make her stand out even at a top-tier hospital like Central Medical Center.
They exchanged a knowing glance before immediately shifting into professional mode.
The pregnant patient's records were quickly retrieved.
"Placental abruption with severe blood loss. Emergency C-section required," Evelyn stated calmly, scanning the test results.
A weak plea came from the hospital bed. "Doctor... please save my baby..."
Tear tracks streaked the woman's pale face as her fingers feebly gripped the sheets.
Evelyn removed her gloves and grasped the patient's icy hand. "Trust me. You and your baby will both be fine."
As anesthesia took effect, the woman's eyelids fluttered before Gregory's precise administration rendered her unconscious.
The operating lights remained illuminated for six grueling hours.
When Evelyn emerged cradling the premature infant weighing barely five pounds, only a bespectacled young man waited anxiously in the hallway.
"The baby's stable but requires incubation," Evelyn informed the nurse before turning to the man. "Are you family?"
He wiped his sweaty forehead. "Just a friend. The father's still in ICU..." His voice cracked with emotion.
Evelyn interrupted gently. "We need supplies for mother and child. Can you contact other relatives?"
"I'll handle it!" The man nearly collided with the wall in his haste to leave.
Back in surgery, Evelyn guided Olivia Lightfoot through suturing techniques.
"Dr. Carter, we couldn't have done this without you," Olivia's muffled voice admitted through her mask. "My first time handling such complexity."
Evelyn adjusted monitor settings. "Teamwork matters more."
By shift's end, midnight had passed.
Exhausted staff slumped against locker room walls, sipping glucose solutions.
Gregory recovered first. Returning freshly changed, he announced, "Torrential rain outside."
"No umbrella!" Olivia groaned, shooting Evelyn a pleading look.
Evelyn checked her phone—no messages.
"Share a ride?" she suggested.
Gregory volunteered, "I'll drive you."
In the hospital lobby, Evelyn froze at a familiar silhouette.
Alexander Hamilton sat alone in the vacant waiting area, a black umbrella resting beside him.
"You should've told me you were coming," Evelyn approached him.
Alexander stood, his gaze lingering on her face. "The nurses said you were in surgery."
His fingers lightly traced the mask indentations on her cheeks. "Tired?"
"Successful delivery," Evelyn's eyes brightened. "A healthy baby girl."
Alexander's lips curved slightly. "You always perform miracles."
Evelyn shook her head. "Credit goes to the team."
She glanced back at her colleagues.
Alexander's gaze traveled past her, locking with Gregory's in a silent confrontation.
"Dr. Wilson," Alexander's voice turned glacial.
Gregory nodded evenly. "Mr. Hamilton."
