Chapter 757
Alexander Hamilton frowned slightly. "Peanut is still an animal. Could there be risks with the baby around?"
Evelyn Carter looked up at him. "Has Peanut been vaccinated?"
"Of course." His gaze softened. "Vaccines, deworming, baths—nothing was missed. My mother handled everything personally."
Margaret Hamilton had doted on Peanut like a child during her solitary years. Now the cat was utterly spoiled.
The corners of Evelyn's lips lifted as she imagined Peanut's fur puffing up during bath time. "Then there's no issue. Many families keep pets away from children due to hygiene concerns, but Peanut has always been indoors. That's not a problem here."
Alexander mentally filed away this parenting knowledge. Though Auntie Wu was experienced, some perspectives needed updating.
A phone ringtone interrupted.
It was Olivia Lightfoot calling.
Evelyn answered immediately. Alexander continued entertaining the baby and Peanut, but his ears subtly perked up.
"Dr. Carter!" Olivia's voice brimmed with energy. "We'll see you next Monday! Your office is ready, nameplate hung—just waiting for your return!"
Evelyn instinctively glanced at Alexander, her eyes complex. She owed him gratitude, yet he'd instructed the dean not to inform her.
Alexander敏锐地察觉到她的目光,转头时却只看到她专注地看着宝宝。
"The application is submitted, but adjusting to work rhythms might take time. I'll need your help then," Evelyn said gently.
Olivia agreed readily. "No problem! By the way, how's your presentation prep? The dean says you're the hospital's pride!"
Evelyn sighed inwardly. The case resolution wasn't primarily her功劳, but for the dean's reputation, she had to accept the credit.
"Haven't started writing yet, but I do have thoughts on rural healthcare disparities. Worst case, I'll share work experiences—it's all among colleagues anyway."
She planned to retreat to the study and draft after resting.
Olivia's next words stunned her.
"Don't worry, Dr. Wilson is presenting too. His topic is Sino-foreign medical developments—definitely less接地气 than yours."
Alexander's back straightened instantly. At "Dr. Wilson," his ears practically twitched.
Even Peanut tilted its head at his reaction.
Alexander clenched his fists, resisting the urge to snatch the phone.
Evelyn hesitated. "Which...Dr. Wilson?"
"Anesthesiology's Dr. Wilson." Olivia sounded puzzled. "You've collaborated on many surgeries. Did something happen?"
The hospital knew nothing of Gregory Wilson's past pursuit of Evelyn, assuming they were merely colleagues.
Evelyn denied quickly. "No. I just didn't expect his return. With his credentials, UK hospitals should be competing for him..."
After their N市 encounter, she assumed Gregory would deliberate longer. His quiet return surprised her.
Perhaps this was better. Only the guilty avoided confrontation.
Clearly, Gregory had truly moved on.
"Having such an excellent anesthesiologist benefits patients," she said evenly.
Olivia disagreed. "Our hospital is outstanding too! His return is the logical choice!"
"Right, right." Evelyn hastily praised the hospital, avoiding misunderstandings.
After hanging up, Alexander's expression cycled through emotions.
A miscalculation!
He'd just removed Gregory from his watchlist—now he had to reinstate him. His conflicted gaze lingered on Evelyn, words trapped in his throat.
Evelyn said coolly, "Heard everything? Ask whatever you want."
Alexander's face shifted through shades before forcing out: "Gregory's career choices are his own. I won't interfere. Your happiness matters most."
The words stabbed his heart. Imagining Gregory working alongside Evelyn daily made him want to demolish the hospital.
But to avoid appearing controlling, he white-knuckled his restraint.
Evelyn blinked. "Doesn't that hurt?"
He inhaled deeply. "No."
She called his bluff directly. "Your knuckles are pale. Don't pretend magnanimity if it pains you—I'm used to it anyway. Your attitude won't sway my decisions, especially not this one."
